2001 Frankfurt Motor Show

Looking like the midway point between the Focus Wagon and Escape, the Fusion crossover concept is an urban adventure vehicle that showcases a turbocharged Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) engine. Designed for the city driver, the Fusion powerplant provides more oomph than its displacement suggests at modest speeds, along with considerable fuel economy. The ultralight 1.1-liter, three-cylinder engine produces 108 horsepower, with a broad torque peak reached at a low 1800 rpm. Other technical highlights include electronically assisted manual transmission, DVD-based entertainment system, and Xenon headlamps. With tight parking-spot-friendly dimensions, tall seat height, and SUV-like cargo flexibility, the Fusion may be the city commuter of tomorrow.
