BMW describes its new 7 Series as the most technologically advanced BMW ever, and designers have certainly emphasized its technical innovations and interior design. A new ergonomics concept called "iDrive" divides the cabin into a "driving area," moving all primary driving controls onto or around the steering wheel, and a "comfort area" with telematics, entertainment controls, and even WAP Internet access for passengers. While the U.S. will not get the overseas-only 3.6-liter/272-horsepower 735i, we can look forward to a 6.0-liter/408-horsepower V-12. The 745i gets a 333-hp 4.4-liter engine capable of pulling 0-62 mph in just 6.3 seconds. Shifting is via six-speed automatic tranny with Steptronic shifting through steering-wheel-mounted paddles. Pricing will be released closer to the on-sale date in early 2002.
