The model that defined the hot hatch segment that still thrives in Europe, the GTI, made its world debut in concept form based on the all-new Golf. Visually distinguished from the volume Golf models, this concept draws arrow-shaped influences from the Concept R roadster, color cues from the first-generation GTI, and adds twin exhaust pipes and rear spoiler. The interior features GTI cues, from three-spoke steering wheel to embroidered logos, and it is dressed in aluminum trim and suede leather. Lively performance is ensured with a turbocharged 200-horsepower engine matched with a direct selection gearbox, sport-tuned suspension, fortified brakes, and large 18-inch wheels. Will VW build the GTI? Look for the production model to appear at the 2004 Paris Motor Show.
