The all-new S40 makes its world debut in Frankfurt, becoming the first Volvo to use a shared Ford platform. Part of Ford's C1 Technologies program, the platform will also be used for the next-generation Focus and the Mazda 3, also being unveiled in Germany. The S40 draws clear design inspiration from the larger S60 and S80 sedans, rightly suggesting big-car caliber safety and luxury features will be offered on this compact range. Powertrains to range from four-cylinder turbodiesel to five-cylinder gasoline, with the top output for the performance-oriented T5 model to be 220-horsepower. The S40 will be joined by a wagon variant named V50, fitting with Volvo's revised even/odd nomenclature for distinguishing body styles. America is expected to be the largest market for the S40.
