Looking like an escapee from a Ginza, Tokyo, toy store, the i Concept is more than a static show machine, it has served test duty for a car to be launched in Japan in 2005. Already, the i has achieved maximum 5-Star ratings (lowest environmental impact) in fuel consumption and emissions testing performed recently in Germany. The key is an ultra-efficient 1.0-liter engine with Stop-Start, which shuts off the powerplant when the vehicle is stationary. This wee engine is fitted midship and powers the rear wheels to improve crashworthiness and maximize interior space.
