2003 Frankfurt Motor Show Coverage


In a hall overflowing with rival sports cars, Porsche unveiled the first 911 Turbo Cabriolet since 1989. The convertible is naturally based on the existing 911 Turbo coupe, sharing its body, powertrain, all-wheel-drive system, suspension, and brakes. Translation: tremendously impressive performance from a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter/415-horsepower six-cylinder engine, fitted with a choice of six-speed manual or five-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Porsche claims a 0-62-mph time of 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 189 mph. To fortify the open-top car, the structure has been enhanced with reinforced with double-thick side-sills, additional junction plates, and reinforcements behind the B pillar. Porsche Stability Management (PSM), hard top, wind deflector, Bose audio system, and navigation system are all standard. Price will start at $128,200 when the 911 Turbo Cabriolet goes on sale this fall.
