2003 Frankfurt Motor Show Coverage
The CS&S proves that being green can more fun than Kermit ever let on. Making its world debut, the CS&S (Compact Sports & Speciality) concept applies the lauded Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain to a mid-engined sports car. Simply stated, the rear wheels are motivated by a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, while the front wheels are spun by powerful electric motors as needed. Designed in the South of France, the CS&S has a removable canopy that allows it to transmogrify from two to four seats. Taking it a step further, the front passenger seat can become a security cover for the forward row. The CS&S also introduces Space Touch holographic controls that out-geek the controversial BMW iDrive controller. This unique system projects spheres that appear to float in space, but when touched they allow the user to control the air conditioning, audio, satellite navigation or even Internet connections. Sized between the current Celica and MR2 models, the CS&S has us seeking trees to hug.
