Now in its 37th year, the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) prides itself in being the premier automotive trade event in the world, offering two million square feet of exhibit space filled with products dedicated solely to expanding the performance of our cars, trucks, and SUVs. Every year, our editors pack their most comfortable shoes and travel across the desert to the Las Vegas Convention Center, drawn to this automotive Mecca for a nitrous-charged religious experience.
This year, we drove out in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, with turbo in full song and carbon-trimmed wing raised in rebellion. We traveled across the dusty plains that separate Vegas from civilization, flirting with triple-digit speeds and savoring what is essentially a factory tuner car. As we lived our restrained "2Fast 2Furious" fantasies, we were anticipating the opportunity to wander the miles of aisles weaving among more than 1500 tricked-out vehicles and thousands of additional parts, tools, and components, all designed to push the automotive performance and styling envelope.
Our focus this week was on the OEM projects vehicles; stock vehicles transformed by both internal development teams and provided to leading aftermarket firms to showcase their wares and the latest trends. Naturally, a few unofficial projects caught our eye as we gathered a collection of the most significant, standout vehicles from a truly overwhelming event.
Literally hundreds of vehicles caught our attention, and we've sorted through them all to include the cream of the crop here for your review. We could have kept going, but all good things must come to an end, sometime.
