Unlike the majority of the vehicles presented at SEMA, racing purists can purchase their own rally-ready Lancer Evolution RS directly from a Mitsubishi dealer, rather than commissioning one from an aftermarket tuner. The RS shares the same intercooled and turbocharged 2.0-liter/271-horsepower DOHC four-cylinder engine found in the rocket-like Lancer Evolution, as well as its five-speed manual transmission. But, nearly 150 pounds lighter than the Evo, the 3175-pound RS sheds its rear-wing spoiler, air conditioning, and audio system, as well as its antilock brakes and the power mechanisms for the windows, locks, and side mirrors, all for the sake of improved performance. Besides the strict diet, the RS benefits from a front helical-type limited-slip differential that splits power front/rear and side/side, shifting the bias to the wheel that has more traction for increased performance while turning. The RS also receives a rear crossbar for improved handling.
