Attempting to expand the appeal of the original smart beyond its original microscopic origins, the smart division of DaimlerChrysler has recently begun selling innovative roadster and roadster-coupe models in Europe. Where the original smart was designed for the tight urban jungle, the new models are designed with longer distances in mind. The mid-ship mounted four-cylinder engine grants spirited performance, while the innovative retracting cloth top with removable side rails, give a unique open-air motoring environment. Although there are no plans to bring the roadster or coupe-roadster to the U.S., smart has announced tentative plans for bringing the next-generation, slightly larger product to America, possibly starting in 2005.
