Land Rover showed a special-edition SUV based on the rugged Freelander in the Land Rover G4 Challenge. Building up from the Freelander SE, the G4 Edition adds full-length roof rails and rack, brush bar, siderails, rear lamp guards, and 17-inch HSE wheels outside, and waterproof G4 logo seat covers and sunroof inside. Standard engine is 2.5-liter/174-hp V-6 mated to a five-speed CommandShift tranny that allows "manual" or fully automatic shifting. Four-wheel electronic traction control, a sophisticated viscous coupling unit, and Hill Descent Control work to transmit power to all four wheels, even when traveling down steep slopes. If the Tangiers Orange paint job doesn't announce it clearly enough, special G4 Challenge badging can also be found on the front fenders and rear tailgate. A limited number of these G4 Edition Freelanders will be available this summer with a target price under $30,000.
