2004 Detroit Auto Show
Scion will expand its range and reach with the tC, a five-seat sporty coupe scheduled to go on sale nationally in June. Based on the Toyota Avensis, the tC is the first Scion model exclusively bodied for the youth-targeted division. Although it looks like a notch-back coupe with a traditional trunk, the tC benefits from the versatility of a hatchback and a 60/40-split rear seat. Folding the rear and front passenger seats creates 8.5-feet of linear cargo space. Other key exterior details include a panoramic moonroof, recessed windshield wipers, and side mirrors with built-in turn signals. Premium touches are seen throughout this affordable machine, from aluminum interior trim to standard four-wheel ABS. But the aspect that truly stands out is the powertrain: While the xA and xB have conservative 1.8-liter/108-hp engines, the tC has a more enthusiastic 2.4-liter/160-hp four-cylinder shared with the Camry. Going a step further, TRD will offer a dealer-installed supercharger later in the year to boost output to 200 horses.
