2004 Los Angeles Auto Show

Toyota pushes the impressive Corolla to the next level for 2005 with the XRS sport sedan. The chassis is enhanced with a more aggressive setup that includes increased rate coil springs and shocks, and a Yamaha-sourced front connecting rod damper. As a result, the ride height is lowered a half inch, and both pitch and roll have been reduced. For motivation, the XRS will be fitted with a specially tuned version of the 2ZZ DOHC engine found in the Celica GT-S that boasts improved midrange torque, a notorious weakness of this 1.8L powerplant. As in the Celica, this Corolla will boast a six-speed manual transmission. The sporting character carries over to the steering, where a special rack has been developed for improved response. The XRS can be visually distinguished with its 16-inch wheels, color-keyed grille bezel, and unique badging. Likewise, the interior features model-specific enhancements, including sport seats, silver-colored center cluster and switch plates, and leather-like shift boot with a leather shift knob. The XRS is schedule to go on sale May 1, 2004.
