Based on GM's Delta architecture, the Cobalt sedan will be offered in base, LS, LT, and SS trims. Cobalt standard features include A/C, electric rear defogger, AM/FM/CD stereo, and driver information center. Available features include heated leather seats, power sunroof, XM Satellite Radio, MP3 playback, and OnStar. The base engine is a 2.2L/140-hp Ecotec I-4 with 150 lb-ft of torque. Next up is a 2.4L/170-hp Ecotec with 170 lb-ft of torque. The range is topped with the sporty SS package, featuring a supercharged 2.0-liter Ecotec engine. Although official output hasn't been disclosed, expect power to at least match the Saturn Ion Red Line with 205 horsepower. The SS promises to be a true sport compact contender with an aggressive suspension, short-throw manual shifter, large tire fitment, dressed exterior, and specific interior trim. In the end, perhaps the greatest excitement stems from the dedication to eradicate the how-hum fit-and-finish reputation created by the Cavalier. GM engineers are already boasting of tight 3mm tolerances on exterior body panels - a good indicator that this will be a tighter machine.
