2004 Geneva Motor Show

It is agreed by most observers that the new 5-series is the best of the recent flame-surfaced Chris Bangle designs and in the 5-series, the new station wagon "Touring" version is the best realized of all. In Geneva one of the stars of the BMW stand was the 530d Touring, a luxury diesel-powered estate wagon designed for markets where fuel commonly costs $5 per gallon or more. In addition to the 3.0-liter diesel, other engine choices include a 2.5-liter diesel, a 2.5-liter six, and a 4.4-liter V-8 shared with the X5, all mated to manual, sequential, and automatic six-speed transmissions. An all-aluminum chassis and aluminum body panels keep weight in check while the iDrive control system has been improved with the addition of an enhanced voice control, Head-Up Display, Active Cruise Control, Adaptive Headlights with bi-xenon beams and two-stage brake lights (Brake Force Display). Additional high-tech features include self-leveling suspension, Active Steering, Dynamic Drive, DSC with DTC, run flat tires, and Tire Defect Indicator.
