Having started its production history as a Euro-inspired roadster in 1953, the Corvette is forever connected with top-down motoring. The tradition continues this fall, when the sixth-generation coupe is joined by a convertible for the 2005 model year. The base model features a manual cloth top, but a power-operated top option returns for the first time since 1962. With a single button push, the car transforms in 19 seconds from a quiet, closed cockpit to an open roadster. While many modern-day high-tech features can add mass quickly, the Convertible keeps a base curb weight of 3,199 pounds, 49 pounds less than the 2004 model. Even the optional power top mechanism only adds just 14 pounds to the car's weight and occupies no more trunk space than the manual version. Rear visibility is improved with the new model fitted with a glass backlight that that measures nearly 20 percent larger than the 2004 version. Like the coupe, the convertible features a 6.0L/400-hp V-8 LS2 engine. Production begins fall 2004.
