Mazda expands the amount of Zoom-Zoom in its crossover sport-utility line with the presentation of its seven-seat 2007 CX-9 at the 2006 New York Auto Show. While styling echoes the recently introduced CX-7, and both are based off the Mazda6 platform, Mazda insists the CX-9 is not a lengthened three-row CX-7, and warns the CX-7 should not be considered to be a shorter-wheelbase CX-9. Its smooth and flowing silhouette matches the recent Mazda design philosophy; prominent wheels and tires, muscular fenders, and steeply angled windshield and backlight combine to give the CX-9 a dramatic but refined appearance.

At 113.2 inches, the 2007 Mazda CX-9 rides on one of the longest wheelbases in the segment, promising easy access to its three-row seating with room for adults in every position and plenty of cargo room to accommodate modern American families. The 60/40-split second row seats three, while the 50/50-split third row seats two.

Underhood, the CX-9 is powered by a new 3.5-liter/250-horsepower V-6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Drive is either through the front wheels or via Mazda's Active Torque-Split All-Wheel-Drive system also found in the MazdaSpeed 6 and CX-7 models.

The 2007 Mazda CX-9 crossover sport-utility vehicle will be offered in three trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. While more information will be available about option packages closer to its on-sale date in early 2007, standard features on all trims will include air conditioning, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and six airbags. Safety features make a long list with a variety of acronyms that promise ample protection.
