2005 Chicago Auto Show Coverage

Hyundai debuted its Portico concept in Chicago, showcasing a solution for family transportation that fits in the Euro-centric space between a tall wagon and minivan. This decidedly international configuration was conceived to explore its potential for the U.S. market, as Hyundai seeks new niches to add to its growing portfolio. Within the artfully rendered multipurpose vehicle are two rows of three-across seating, with the flexibility to stagger the seats to enhance shoulder space. This unique approach preserves considerable space behind the second row often consumed by a third row in current production crossovers. Powertrain in this concept use the new Lamba DOHC V-6 with a six-speed Shiftronic automatic, but the show vehicle was engineered to also accept Hyundai's 219-hp hybrid drive system.
