Just because the economy has come to a screeching halt, the banking industry is upside down, and nobody wants to buy a new vehicle isn't any reason to be glum. Because it's SEMA time; the time of year when all the silly and whacky and extreme vehicles make their way to Las Vegas to capture a little bit of attention at one of the biggest car shows on the planet. Technically, it's a trade show and closed to the public, many of the companies involved, including the more intelligent automotive manufacturers, spend all year designing and building their special rigs so they can show off their creativity. In a nutshell, if you take away all the buying and selling that goes on, SEMA is all about automotive creativity. We'll bring you all the cool pickups and SUVs we can find, with as much information as we can gather in the time it takes to shoot a photo and run up to our rooms for downloading. And don't be surprised if you see some of the more interesting vehicles show up in Truck Trend Magazine's SEMA coverage in the March/April issue. In the meantime, enjoy the wildest and crazy car show of the year.

The 2008 SEMA show kicks off on election day, Tuesday November 4, and runs until Friday November 7.

2009 Ford F-150 by Street Scene Equipment

Starting with a top-line F-150 Lariat Supercrew, Street Scene takes the Blue Oval's full-size and gives it the slammed treatment by lowering it, adding a body kit, wheels, a mesh grille, lower air intake, and two-tone paint for the complete SEMA-friendly look. Street Scene has been building custom trucks for years, and with a host of visual, performance, and luxury upgrades, its F-150 Lariat is created "for those who don't believe in compromises."

2009 Ford F-150 Heavy Duty DeWalt Contractor Concept

Designed to be the ultimate tool for contractors, DeWalt's director of business development Jennifer Ervin says for its concept F-150 the company "thought how a contractor uses his or her truck on the job" and worked to add every conceivable application to turn it into a rolling workshop. These include Ford's new Work Solutions software with DeWalt's Tool Link, which helps ensure all necessary tools for a job are loaded before departure, a built-in charger for battery powered equipment, and special storage compartments, among others. To carry around all that extra weight the powertrain has also been modified for improved performance and efficiency.

2009 Ford F-150 by Hi-Pa Drive

Of course a no compromises, tuner full-size truck might not be so popular if gas returns to $4 a gallon, but not to worry -- Ford has that scenario covered with the new Hi-Pa Drive F-150. Featuring a unique alternative powertrain, the stock truck's engine, drivetrain, and transmission have all been replaced by four in-wheel electric motors that together reportedly deliver over 600 hp and more torque than the V-8 mill found on regular F-150s. Besides offering gas and emissions-free driving, moving the truck's propulsion to the wheels also opens up more space, allowing for new storage and design solutions.

2009 Ford F-150 Fahrenheit FX-4 by X-Treme Toyz

As opposed to a work truck, X-Treme Toyz set out build an ideal F-150 for weekend warriors, upping its capability for campers, bikers, and off-road enthusiasts. Adding extras like 9000-lb winches hidden behind each license plate at the front and rear, a bike rack across the top rail, and a Bedslide sliding cargo drawer that holds a tool box, tire, and compressor, X-Treme Toyz owner Mike Duval says "you can basically put all of your toys in the truck, hook up the trailer and go." And to make sure you go in style, he also added distinctive "hot flame" exterior graphics to each side.

2009 Ford F-150 Striker R SuperCrew

This custom Ford F-150 was inspired by the Ford Mustang GT500KR, and it will be on display at the 2008 SEMA Show next week.

The front end gets a black anodized diamond mesh grille, and twin hood intakes accentuate its aggressive looks. Billet front fender vents and side scoops for brake cooling also give the truck a racing look. Le Man-style race stripes in "Badass Blue" run the length of the truck. Inside, Katzkin Leather matches the silver and blue exterior colors with silver and blue leather surfaces and seats. Matching floor coverings, aluminum racing pedals, and auxiliary gauges are also standard. Sony supplies its Xplod in-car entertainment system.

Powering the Striker R is the 5.4L V-8 engine with a Kenne Bell 2.4L Blowzilla supercharger. The intercooled system puts out 500 hp with the additional assistance from a cold air intake, Boost-a-Pump, and an Optimizer II electronic engine management system. A Corsa Cat-Back exhaust system puts the finishing touches on the engine enhancements.

A Bell Tech suspension package gives the full-size truck excellent handling. The rear differential stays cool and good-looking with a custom Striker R alloy cover. Rounding out the rest of the truck are sets of eight-piston brake calipers supplied by Stainless Steel Brakes Corp, which clamp down on 15-in. Big Bite cross-drilled rotors. The Striker R's 22-in. custom alloy wheels and tires are both supplied by Pirelli. Rubber of choice are Pirelli's high-performance Scorpion Zero Assimmetrico tires.

2008 Ford F-350 Crew Cab Dually

Powered by the 6.4L Power Stroke turbodiesel, this F-350 gets some additional kick with a Banks Big Hoss bundle. The bundle includes an intake, engine management, and exhaust system. The Dually looks sharp with a Hulst Customs Striker body kit, Gaylord's Lids tonneau cover, and Sherwin-Williams Planet Color custom paint with Sharpline Converting stripes and graphics. The F-350 gets some additional performance with a DJM lowering kit, SSBC disc-brake upgrades, and Pirelli tires wrapped in American Force 24-in. custom dually wheels. A Katzkin Leather Interior custom leather interior and Sony A/V entertainment system keeps driver and passengers entertained.

2009 Hummmer H3T Weekend Warrior

New Hummer CEO James Taylor calls the brand's concepts -- the Weekend Warrior -- "thought starters for enthusiasts who want to express themselves," as both primarily use factory accessories and aftermarket parts to show what can be done to the rugged haulers with "a few weekends in the garage." Based on a H3T Alpha, the Weekend Warrior concept includes several GM Performance parts that give its 5.3L, 300-hp V-8 an additional 70 hp, including LS2 cylinder heads, a higher-lift camshaft, and a 3.5-in. exhaust system. For truly Baja-worthy handling, the Weekend Warrior also receives several suspension components including as Light Racing JounceShocks, high-performance brakes from DBA, and 35-in.-tall tires on special matte-black 20-in. wheels from Hummer's own accessory catalog.

Of course, no SEMA showcar is complete without a major dose of bling, so the H3T Weekend Warrior also comes with custom Baja Orange Metallic paint, a body-color upper grille, and custom hood graphics. In addition, the lower grille, side mirrors, door handles, and fuel door all sport a satin-metal finish, and off-road lamps are mounted on the grille and roof. Most of these upgrades are standard Hummer accessories; however, the black-leather-trimmed cabin with orange stitching and carbon-fiber instrument panel accents are not.

2009 Hummer H3 X Concept

Hummer describes the H3 X Concept as "a proposal for the ultimate H3 X," taking a standard H3 X Alpha and sprucing it up with unique 18-in. wheels and 35-in.-tall tires, black chrome finish on its shiny bits (similar to the recent Black Chrome Edition H2), and body-color rear bumper extensions. Inside, the H3 X Concept includes black leather trim with orange stitching on the armrests and shift knob, along with custom floormats and a Hummer accessory headrest DVD entertainment system. Power remains unchanged, but the showcar sports Canyon Metallic paint from PPG.

2009 Hummer H3 Alpha Project Trailhugger

At Hummer's SEMA stand is an H3 Alpha developed by the staff of Four Wheeler magazine, dubbed Project Trailhugger. The Trailhugger (not to be confused with tree-hugger) is modified for increased off-road capability while maintaining reasonable comfort and fuel-economy and features a raft of hard-core accessories, including nitrogen-charged Rod Hall Racing piggyback reservoir-type performance shocks, flat-black GT Simulock 16-in. wheels, a remote perimeter lighting system, and a winch. For a unique appearance, the Trailhugger is also "de-glossed," meaning the H3's chrome trim is painted flat black and its paint modified with a special flattening agent.

Lexus LX 570 by ICON 4x4 Design

ICON specializes in 4x4s that are typically off-road oriented. But they envisioned something different for the plush yet rugged LX 570. Their approach here is to give the LX a clean and stealthy appearance through clever use of colors and trim, then top with performance improvements to further enhance the appeal of Lexus' premier luxury utility vehicle.

The largely cosmetic modifications to the LX 570 consist of matte two-tone gray paint, black chrome trim and emblems, and the removal of side trim and the roof rack on the outside, the replacement of all wood panels with carbon fiber surface effect coatings and the addition of window tint inside, a custom intake and stainless exhaust, custom 24-in. MOZ Calgary wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico tires, and six-piston front/four-piston rear performance brake system.

SLAMMER Scion xB by Jeff Soto

From Southern California, designer Jeff Soto decided to turn his xB into a Bonneville Salt Flats racer. With a chopped roof, big wing and solid, brushed-aluminum hubcaps, it certainly looks the part, and the TRD supercharger under the hood should give it the extra power to complete the illusion.

Legendary Motorcars Company "Four Corners Rock Crawler" Mercedes-benz GLK

Based on the standard GLK 350 with a 268-hp, 3.5L V-6 under the hood, the Rock Crawler is designed for active lifestylers who plan to use the new SUV on snow and sand. Including special off-road wheels and tires, a roof-mounted light bar, and armor to protect against damage, Legendary Motorcar's creation also sports a special winch system to aid wakeboarders and snowboarders.

Brabus Widestar Mercedes-benz GLK

Based on a GLK 320 CDI 4MATIC diesel, the Brabus Widestar includes a body kit, new front and rear and fender flares, a more aggressive lower air intake, and large custom alloy wheels. Inside Brabus is said to have added a special-edition interior, and while no power figures have been released, the tuner's massive brakes imply the presence of some serious power under the hood.

Boulevard Customs Mercedes-benz GLK

Taking a different approach from its peers, Boulevard Customs' ride is more about the Sunset Strip than Pikes Peak or the Autobahn. Featuring a new front end with a prominent mesh grille and lower air intake, the Urban Whip's missing roof and a chopped windshield ensure everyone will see you when you roll up at the club, as will its 26-in. polished wheels. And just to be sure you don't blend in, the concept includes an upgraded interior chock full of entertainment options, too.

RENNtech Pikes Peak Rally Racer Mercedes-benz GLK

Inspired by the famed Pikes Peak Hill Climb, the Rally Racer includes a host of upgrades including a body kit, large front and rear brake cooling ducts, a front spoiler and a massive wing on the roof to aid aerodynamics. Again based on the GLK 350, RENNtech also includes a hybrid motor to improve the Racer's output and acceleration numbers.

Subaru Forester XTI Concept

If you're the type who prefers canyon carving to scaling mountains, however, not to worry -- a visit to the Subaru stand at SEMA won't disappoint. For the XTI concept Subaru is giving its modest family hauler the full STI treatment, starting with the addition of a JDM body kit that includes side skirts, a rear skirt and gate spoiler, along with a mesh grille from the automaker's accessory catalog. New, 18-in. forged alloy wheels wear Yokohama Advan performance tires, an adjustable coil-over suspension helps hug the road, and Brembo brakes with four-piston front calipers (and two-piston rear calipers) are borrowed straight from the Impreza WRX STI to help harness the XTI's added power.

Oh yes, about that power -- to aid in showing other CUVs its taillights, the XTI includes the entire engine and drivetrain from the STI, along with added go-fast goodies like a custom stainless steel cat-back exhaust system boost the 2.5L turbo up to 315 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. The standard Forester transmission is replaced by a close-ratio six-speed manual, and a Driver Controlled Center Differential system offers three performance modes and six manual center differential-locking settings. Of course no super-quick tall wagon would be complete without a little something extra in the cabin, too, so the XTI adds leather and Alcantara sport seats along with a new instrument cluster, dashboard, and leather-wrapped steering wheel for a more businesslike feel.

Presently Subaru isn't releasing specific performance numbers for its XTI Concept, but with its relatively low weight (3447-lbs in stock 2.5XT form), the automaker claims this go-fast Forester can hit the 60 mph mark in under five seconds. There's no word on whether or not the Japanese automaker will actually build this family-hauling beast, but if you've just had a kid and want something that keeps up with your single buds' Camaros and Challenger SRT8s, you might want to give Subaru and ring and let them know you're interested.

Subaru Forester Mountain Rescue Vehicle

The 2009 Subaru Forester is already an excellent vehicle -- small, swift and chuckable yet with surprising off-road prowess and interior room. In fact, the new Forester is so good that we recently dubbed it our Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year. That said, the little Subie crossover isn't exactly a hard-core rock crawler, and despite offering a 2.5XT model with 224 hp and 226 lb-ft of torque, its 7.2-sec 0-60 mph time won't win any drag races, either. So for this year's SEMA show, the automaker is addressing these concerns with a new Mountain Rescue Vehicle, as well as a screaming fast, STI-influenced concept for soccer moms who have motor oil in their veins -- the Forester XTI.

Based on the 2.5XT turbo, Subaru's Forester Mountain Rescue Vehicle concept is meant for use by the Ski Patrol, and includes a host of rugged upgrades to help it storm snow banks and aid stranded vacationers who accidentally went for triple black diamond instead of the bunny hill. A full 14-in. of ground clearance (up from the stock Forester's 8.9-in.) is available through an Air Lift adjustable suspension, special Yokohama Geolander tires and 15-in. custom-reversed near-zero offset steel wheels aid traction, front and rear skid plates protect the undercarriage, and an emergency light package helps the vehicle stand out in a blizzard. In addition, the CUV sports extra body shielding, including fender flares and lower door cladding, as well as rescue equipment like a toboggan and 9500-lb winch.

The all-black Flex rides on huge 24-in. blacked-out Mobsteel forged two-piece wheels wrapped with super-low-profile Pirelli P-Zero Nero tires. The Flex is slammed to the ground thanks to Air Runner front struts, a Mobsteel adjustable rear set-up and a Low Rider Air Management system. A Magnaflow exhaust system gives it an appropriate growl to compliment its menacing looks.

2009 Ford Flex by Galpin Auto Sports

Galpin chose to keep things simple and subtle with their Flex. It's finished in a Butterscotch Orange paint job with a White Pearl roof complimenting a slightly revised front fascia. Inside, the theme carries over with white Katzkin leather seats with butterscotch accents. Entertainment comes from a powerful stereo system using JL Audio components and a custom-built subwoofer enclosure.
