Madam Susan Austin of the Mustang Ranch in Nevada completed her first-ever desert race at the Valley Off-Road Racing Association's Hawthorne 225 on September 5.

While it was Austin's first time competing in an off-road race, she received instruction and assistance from a prominent motorsport name. Rod Hall of Baja racing fame provided the training and Austin even purchased a Rod Hall Racing-prepped Hummer for the Hawthorne 225. By the end of the race, she was fourth in the Sportsman class with a time of 8 hours and 53 minutes.

"I don’t know how old women are that take up this sport, but at 60 to take it up I think this is amazing," said Austin. "I imagine most ladies take up knitting, I don't think I will ever do that!"
