If you’re looking for a compact crossover with unreal performance, this is your best option. The BMW X1 is available with two different turbocharged engines: a 2.0L I-4 or a 3.0L I-6. Although the I-4 offers respectable performance, it’s the I-6 that’ll really get owners’ engines running. Our friends at Motor Trend recorded a 5.3-second 0-to-60 time for the X1— much faster than anything in its class, short of the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG.
Handling is similarly edgy, but braking is a bit of a letdown for such a small, sporty vehicle. However, fuel economy is respectable, with the larger engine still matching or beating some of its less powerful competitors.
The X1’s biggest shortcoming is its interior space, which is far behind that of its larger X3 sibling and some of its competitors. The back seat is cramped, and cargo space is somewhat lacking given its sporty roofline. However, for two passengers, the X1 isn’t a bad choice—especially if those passengers are looking for a fun, exciting driving experience.
