Pre Owned: 2000-2005 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon

A scan of various maintenance reports suggests that the Tahoe has the usual domestic-truck niggles. The transmissions are shown to be troublesome at times, and there are fairly regular reports of emissions-system problems. There's also a big issue: brakes. There are reports of brake problems on the Web, but, as if to add credence to the virtual abuse, Chevy recalled some 98,000 Tahoes (along with Suburbans) earlier this year for brake-related troubles; make sure your candidate has been through the recall process.

Otherwise, the reports are generally good about the Tahoe. Owners say the SUV gets surprisingly good fuel economy for its size and payload; they laud its good (untrucklike) suspension and highway composure. IntelliChoice even rates the Tahoe as an excellent value new and places it among the best in class for low fuel costs, maintenance, operating costs, cost of ownership, and least depreciation. Sounds like Chevy (and GMC) hit the sweet spot of a confounding and crowded market.
