Way back in 1979, AM General began preliminary design work on the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, pronounced Humvee) that's now being used by our soldiers all over the world. The diesel-powered 11/4-ton truck was built to replace the M-151 and other tactical vehicles. In 1983, after a period of development and testing, the U.S. Army awarded AM General a 1.2-billion-dollar contract to produce 55,000 vehicles in five basic models and 15 configurations. Since then, the U.S. Armed Forces have continuously ordered more Humvee trucks, including the latest contract, which lasts through 2009, and will deliver nearly 200,000 vehicles to our troops and more than 50 friendly overseas nations. In 1992, AM General began producing a civilian version of the truck called the HUMMER H1, which shares many of the unique features found on the military Humvee, including full-time four-wheel drive, the tried and true 6.5L diesel engine, a central tire inflation system (CTIS), independent front and rear suspensions with protected inboard disc brakes, and geared wheel hubs for incredible low-range crawling performance.
