To stay one step ahead of the game, you have to be innovative and be able to finish a project quickly. Rocky Fox of Chaotic Rods and Customs is trying his hardest to crush the competition before the end of 2008. Surprisingly, he is set to achieve this through a complete buildup of a new body-style '08 Toyota Tundra CrewMax.
To get his truck looking as close as possible to this rendering, Rocky plans to create a new body-drop-less frame for it out of 2x4x1/4-inch steel tubing. Since this is a big truck, big wheels are almost a requirement to look cool. Rocky is going to set it up for 26s with low-profile tires. He figures that the OD of this combo will be around 32 inches, which is the same size as the stockies. While he searches for wheels and tires, he's going to set up his Slam Specialties airbag-equipped suspension around the factory rollers. The Tundra's adjustable suspension will consist of a set of custom tubular control arms with drop spindles, and the rear will have a basic two-link with track bar.
Because this truck is getting a full build, Rocky will also have his fellow crewmembers at Chaotic help him refinish the exterior with some mild body mods and a paintjob. To start, he wants to add a billet grille from Carriage Works and a roll pan from Grant Kustoms. Shave-work will include removal of the antenna, door handles, and tailgate handle. PPG paint from Brault Auto Paint & Supply will be applied for a simple and clean two-tone paintjob.
Rocky plans to bring some of the exterior paint inside by painting the dash and other miscellaneous pieces. He is also going to remove the center seats for a fiberglass console that will hold the Kinetik-battery-powered subwoofers of the truck's Fusion sound system. This means that the 60/40 rear seats will have to be cut to allow space for the console. All of the remaining seats will be reupholstered in multiple textures of black leather.
At the time this was written, Rocky had already purchased the '08 Tundra. He also started taking measurements of the chassis and putting together the custom framerails. By the time you read this, Rocky will most likely be wrapping up the frame swap and giving everyone a sneak preview of it at the Heat Wave show in Austin, Texas. From there, the truck will continue to get finished in time for this year's SEMA Show. Eventually, you'll get to see it right here in Sport Truck!
