2009 is a big year for 1/2-ton trucks. The debut of both the '09 Ram and '09 F-150 mark the first time we've had two redesigned fullsize trucks in the same competition. We dealt with the difficulty of scheduling and weather conflicts during the course of this year's test, which explains our somewhat strange group of competitors. We've got crew cab trucks with the largest V-8 engine available from every fullsize manufacturer except GM. GM's west coast media fleet was wiped out, and since we work on a magazine schedule, we just couldn't wait for a loaded 6.2L six-speed truck like we wanted. So, we did our best and got a 5.3L extended cab.

We had each truck for about two weeks, some a little more, like the Sierra and F-150, so we took advantage of that and went on a few extra-long road trips. We shared the trucks among the staff-towing, commuting, and just getting used to them before we headed out for two days of photography and back-to-back on-road, off-road, and dyno comparisons on the Superflow dyno at Westech Performance Center in Mira Loma, California. Unfortunately, strong 45+mph Santa Ana winds in our designated testing grade meant there were no back-to-back trailer tests, we had to rely on individual tests spaced days, or weeks apart in that regard. It was less than ideal, but we still had time to generate an opinion and get the basic feel for each truck. After we'd logged hundreds, and in some cases over 1,000 miles behind the wheel, we gathered our notes and put our heads together. We used hard numbers and subjective evaluations to determine which truck was the most significant in '09's market and offered the best all-around package. We also asked ourselves which truck we'd actually spend our money on, which is no simple question with this year's closely matched field.
