Diesel Bombers Trucks - "Better Off Modified Baby"

The BEST 70 Trucks

Ron Fresquez
Jun 1, 2010
We asked the users of www.dieselbombers.com to submit their trucks for a special Readers' Rides section and were hoping we could get as many as 50 entries. The DB crew went nuts and jammed our email with nearly 150 trucks! We increased the pages originally allotted to the story and narrowed the field down to the best 70 trucks. In case you were wondering, BOMB stands for "Better Off Modified Baby." This was a fantastic experience and we really enjoyed the enthusiasm of the Diesel Bombers. Enjoy.

About The Truck: My '06 is my daily driver. It gets me to and from work every day without issue and is still able to put the occasional cocky driver in his place. It also serves double duty on the weekends towing my boat and pulling my truck.

About The Truck: I bought my truck January 7th, 2008. I bought it bone-stock and it has been a work in progress since then. It is nowhere near where I want it to be, but I can only afford a little bit at a time. I'm not scared to take it off-road and get it dirty or work the hell out of it, but I do take care of it. All in all, I will never sell my truck!

I'm a mechanical designer/manufacturing engineer with a solar panel manufacturer in Northern California and love to scuba dive, drag race our Top Alcohol dragster in NHRA events, and always look forward to summer.

About The Truck: I bought my truck (stock) a few years ago when I was stationed in 29 Palms, California. I didn't do much to it then, but once I got stationed in Indiana, I fell in love with diesel performance and haven't stopped modifying it since I got here. It's my daily driver and work truck—it does pretty much whatever I need or want. Last time I dyno'd the truck, it made 332 hp and 749 lb-ft of torque, but that was with RV275s and the stock turbo. Hopefully, it will make 450 to 500 hp and 900 to 1,000 lb-ft next time I get to the dyno.

About The Truck: I am the owner of Diesel Performance Plus LLC, and I have been wanting to build a parallel turbo setup for several years. I saw this truck sitting in a field one day and stopped and bought it. It was an old, beat-up farm truck, and I decided it was a good candidate for the first twin parallel turbo 7.3L Power Stroke pulling truck. It is still a work in progress, but we did get to pull it six times last year. We have lots more plans to refine the looks—both under the hood and outside.

Next Bomb: Upgrade to Dana 60hp front axle
About The Truck: I am 22 years old, and I have had this truck for the last four years. It started life as a 6.5L turbodiesel, which ran great until I tried to get too much power out of it and it turned into a nine-cylinder. I didn't want to put another 6.5L into it, and I loved the Cummins engine, so the solution was simple: swap one into it. I was able to source a whole truck for parts—a '94 Dodge 2500 auto—and then the fun began. I am a welder, so I fabbed everything needed, and if you are looking to do this yourself, you do NOT need a body lift to fit a Cummins! It sure was a labor of love and definitely worth it in the end. Due to the poor economy, I lost my job and had to sell the truck. Luckily, my brother bought it and it's able to stay in the family!

About The Truck: I'm 25 years old, and I currently drive the truck locally in the summer delivering Redimix concrete. I also do semi-professional auto detailing on the side. I love the out-doors, whether it's waterfowl hunting in the fall or deer hunting in the dead of winter, you'll find me enjoying myself outside. I'm also an avid fisherman, both ice fishing and shore/boat fishing in the summer. I enjoy working on my vehicles, too, be it preventa-tive maintenance or adding performance parts. I also LOVE to detail and clean up my vehicles as well as customers' vehicles. As far as my truck goes, it was the first-ever big purchase I made on my own in August of 2006. I bought it 100 percent stock and already had the silencer ring out before I left the dealership. It stayed stock up until a very nice gentleman offered to give me his Edge Comp box for free. I'm still thankful for that today. Ever since then, my truck has been constantly changing and all parts previously mentioned have been added with more planned!

About The Truck: My truck is mainly used as a commuter and whatever else I want to do at the time. I have always had four-wheel-drive vehicles, and this is my second diesel-powered truck, following an '80 International Scout with a Nissan SD-33t turbo-diesel engine. I have the diesel bug and refuse to drive anything else. I fell in love with the first-generation body style and love the looks I get going down the road from other diesel owners. I go to every diesel event I can and have organized a couple of meet and greets in my area.

About The Truck: I've owned this '91 1/2 for four years. Not long after I got it, I decided it was worthy of maximum modification. Only hardcore engine stuff remains. It is the first year for the intercooled 5.9L Dodge Cummins. This truck is built to tow and is as reliable as a stone axe.

About The Truck: This is my first "performance" diesel, and after only a year, I am totally addicted. I love the sport and devote countless hours to my truck and to help fuel the diesel addiction online. About The Truck: I bought it about six months ago—after I sold my bombed '05 Cummins 2500. I bought a DRW because I own a construction company and needed something a little bigger for pulling. I pull with my truck almost every day and it also gets used as a grocery-getter every now and then when the wife drives it. I love my Cummins and will never get anything else. About The truck: I'm a 36-year-old crane operator and bought my truck (my first diesel) brand-new in 2004. It's my daily driver/work truck/tow rig/hobby/money pit. It pulls semi-regular trailer duty, with trailers ranging in weight from less than 2,000 pounds to more than 25,000 pounds. It has dragged my family and me (along with our fifth-wheel camper) out to Yellowstone five times, Florida once, and various other destinations far from home. Yellowstone trip number six is coming this June. It now has a little more than 100,000 miles on the clock and has given me minimal trouble over the years.

Favorite Bomb: Jonathan at Bean’s tunes!
Next Bomb: Full-built block with bigger injectors and more air—and maybe a little NOS for grins
About The Truck: I bought the truck a year old with 50,000 miles on it to tow my mud trucks. One thing led to another, and I'll never go back to gassers. It still tows hay trailers, horse trailers, and a flatbed, but now it hooks as often as I'm able to make it to pulls and occasionally tows a buddy's 24-valve pulling truck home when his luck runs out. My truck now boasts more than 210,000 miles. Diesel runs in my blood, and I love 'em all: 5.9s, 6.6s, 7.3s, etc.

Bombs: S&B cold-air intake; Bully Dog six-position chip, 5-inch straight exhaust, and Isspro gauges (tranny temp, pryo, and boost)
Favorite Bomb: The exhaust system was the first bomb and my favorite because it's what turned me into a bomber for life
Next Bomb: My heart says to bomb my injectors, but my head says transmission
About The Truck: The truck was bought new by my father in 2000—he used it to drive to church on Sundays. When I got the truck from him a little more than a year ago, I knew the spirit of the 7.3L was not being fulfilled, so it has been bombs away ever since. It has 130,000 miles under its belt. I was taught my knowledge of the diesel motor by two shade-tree tractor mechanics, and I have spun that into my own love of diesel pickups. I play football (defensive end) for Texas A&M Commerce, a Division II college in east Texas. My life is dedicated to football, good lookin' women, and diesel horsepower—Better Off Modified Baby!

About The Truck: I purchased my truck in February 2001. I used it for work, and I was a commercial electrician, so it did get dirty. I was 25. Since then, it's been a very reliable truck. I'm on the second set of batteries and I've replaced the water pump. Last March was when the bombs started. It is a daily driver and fun to drive, but not as fast as my '02. I am a network engineer full-time and a professional pilot part-time.

Bombs: AFE intake, 5-inch straight pipe, AirDog, Smarty POD, Sun Coast tranny with DTT torque converter and flexplate
Favorite Bomb: Smarty POD
Next Bomb: Turbo and six-speed conversion
About The Truck: I bought this truck in Alaska and started doing little things to it. I left for a year to Korea and when I came back, I hooked up the trailer and moved to Las Vegas (in the process frying my tranny). Since then, I've been trying to get it working right and nothing is working—not even the built tranny—so I'm going to move over to a six-speed.

About The Truck: My truck is a do-all vehicle: race, tow, off-road, commuter, grocery getter, and whatever else I need it to do. It has never let me down. The size and reliability of the truck puts my mind at ease when my family is tagging along. My truck has ruined me—I don't know how much I'm spoiled until I drive something else. Then I’m like, "I miss my truck!"

About The Truck: I bought this truck bone-stock with 18,000 miles on it. Now it has a little more than 72,000 miles on it. I had the truck sold last year but could not bring myself to follow through with the deal and backed out. I use the truck to tow my quads and my restored '40 John Deere tractor to shows.

Bombs: AFE Stage 2 intake, N-Fab nerf bars, and more
Favorite Bomb: My new tires and rims
Next bomb: New programer and bigger turbo
About The Truck: I bought this truck used in July 2008. It had a lot of the mods on it, like the Buckstop bumper, AFE air intake, Line-X bedliner, A-pillar Isspro gauges (boost, EGT, and transmission temp), and the turnover ball gooseneck hitch by B&W. I was able to put some of my taste on it like the Recon roof lights and blacked-out headlights that came later (this photo was a before pic). I also put an 80-gallon transfer tank under the toneau cover. I've put on a CFM Plus intake elbow, tinted the front glass, added vent visors, and put a Z-Lift on it so I could run my new tires (35-inch Nitto Mud Grapplers) and rims. Yes, this is my daily driver and hauler/race truck. And I'm not done.

Bombs: Airaid cold-air intake, Auto Meter pillar gauges (boost, trans temp, and EGT), 4-inch straight-piped exhaust, propane injection, TS Performance six-position chip, ATS Stage 2 transmission with deep pan, ATS Five Star torque converter, and ATS ported compressor housing
Favorite Bomb: Propane injection
Next Bomb: 6-inch mitre stacks
About The Truck: I bought my truck in February 2009 and it was the first vehicle I ever purchased. In May 2009, my clutch packs went out in my transmission and I was forced to sell my '68 Mustang (my first car that I received for my 16th birthday) to pay for the ATS transmission. I do all the work on my truck—which has increased my passion for diesels—and it made me come to the decision to go to school to be a diesel tech.

About The Truck: I bought this truck in August from my friend Ricky Payne who owns the Tire Station. He bought it as a cab-and-chassis truck from a company in Hickory, North Carolina, with 302,000 miles on it. We got a bed for it along with all the '08 front end parts. We had everything painted two-tone with black on top, and silver on the bottom.
