Specific tasks require the proper tools to get the job done right. That's why you have more than one friend on your speed-dial list, and more than one size hammer in your toolbox. Seasoned long-haul truck drivers understand the West Coast of the United States is much different than the spacious Midwest-and they select their equipment accordingly. Harbor cities, in particular, require truckers to use a special set of tactics to negotiate successfully.

Let's say you were hauling shipping containers around the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Combined, these two commerce areas cover more than 10,000 acres and 60 miles of coastline. That makes it one of the busiest seaports in the world. The environment there is cramped, and the air is polluted because of all the activity.

When you drove around you'd be spending so much of your time stopping and idling, you'd wonder why your truck has more than three gears in the transmission. Your trips would be short, and you'd never be more than a few feet from Los Angeles' electrical grid."
Delivering goods in a congested urban area like this is exactly what the Artisan Vehicle Systems Class 8 truck is designed to handle. We took a look (and a ride) to get a better understanding of how this diesel-electric series hybrid works. In many ways, this truck adapts the proven diesel-electric drivetrain philosophy that locomotives use. If all goes well with this prototype-look for more diesel-electric trucks at a port near you.
