Mike Matamoros built an '06 Chevy Silverado that we featured in 2009 named "Blue Bombshell." Not satisfied with a mere multi-page feature, Mike wanted more, so he went out and bought a new truck and started from scratch with the intent of getting on the cover of Truckin'. Now, after not even two years later, Mike has made it. Check out these pages to see what he did to make an award-winning cover truck that drops jaws daily.
After buying this '07 GMC Sierra, Mike went to work making it a fully customized ride. Teaming up with Jerry Abercrombie, from Drag By Customs in Temple, Texas, Mike installed an Ekstensive front suspension kit along with a set of Slam Specialties RE7 'bags. Out back, Jerry Abercrombie installed a two-link with a track bar as well as another set of Slam Specialties 'bags controlled by an AccuAir E-Level system. The rearend has been shortened a full 10 inches and Moser axles have been installed to make room for a classy set of 26x10-inch Intro Twisted Blade wheels and Hankook 305/30R26 tires. To slow this 'bagged beauty down, Mike installed a set of Baer Aluma Sport big brakes. Extra attention was paid to disassemble the calipers and paint them Daytona Blue to match the soon-to-be-sprayed flames.

The body was another project in and of itself. First, the gas door, third brake light, tailgate handle, stake pockets, and firewall were all shaved. Next, the front bumper was smoothed and painted and a Grant Kustoms three-piece roll pan was installed in the rear. The gas filler was moved to the front of the bed and opens with a Harley Davidson style pop-up cap. In the bed, Mike fabricated a full sheetmetal bed and Drag By Customs built a custom sheetmetal box for under the bed that houses the two Air Zenith compressors. This box is covered by a piece of acrylic done by Billet and Acrylic Fantasies and features the Aftermath club logo. After Dave Flint, at Pristine Image, finished the bodywork, he sprayed it with a DuPont black base and Pat Maxwell came in and sprayed DuPont Daytona Blue flames over the entire truck. To see how this beauty was painted, check out page 102.
The 5.3L V8 has been upgraded with an SLP performance cam, polished K&N cold-air intake, Superchips Flashpaq, Moroso plug wires, and a Dynomax exhaust system. To clean up the engine compartment, trailer fenders were welded in place and painted to match, billet caps from Billet and Acrylic Fantasies featuring the Aftermath logo were added, and Moroso valve covers, smoothed and painted radiator cover, fuse box, and radiator cover go a long way when it comes to style points.

The interior continues the black and blue theme with Katzkin black leather and black suede seat covers featuring blue stitching. The dash has been smoothed and painted by Dave Flint and a set of US Speedo gauges were installed. Several plastic pieces throughout the cab were also painted blue. Malachi Montgomery created a fiberglass center console that also serves as a sub housing. The premium sound system is comprised of a Pioneer in-dash CD player, three Polk Audio amplifiers, four Polk 12-inch subwoofers, and three sets of Polk 61/2-inch components. To power this ear-pounding Polk system, the stock battery was upgraded to a Kinetik HC 1300 power cell and relocated under the bed.
With the truck finished just in time for SEMA, Mike had accomplished what he set out to do, build a Truckin' cover truck. We are glad he did because he obviously knows what looks good. Mike wanted to send a special thank you to his family for all their love and support, Dave Flint from Pristine Image, Jerry "Big" Abercrombie from Drag By Customs, Daniel Reyna from "Kustom Rendering", and most of all his Aftermath family.
