Jose Pena, owner of Drops 'r' Us, in Houston, wanted to show exactly what he was capable of, and what better way to advertise than by building a badass custom truck. After weighing his options on which truck would provide the best bang for the buck, Jose picked up a new body style, regular cab Silverado that he affectionately dubbed Cheyenne (which is what the Silverado is still called in Mexico). Jose quickly went to work melding the best of the world of custom street trucks with his love of going fast, and in the process, created a head-turning street rocket.

After stripping the frame of everything unnecessary and painting it, Jose needed to bring the truck down closer to the Houston pavement. To accomplish this, a set of McGaughys 2-inch drop spindles were installed along with a pair of custom control arms on each side. To achieve adjustability, Slam Specialties SS-7 'bags were used up front. To the McGaughys spindles, Jose bolted on a set of 15-inch Baer rotors with six-piston calipers for maximum braking performance. Out back, a pair of Ridetech Shockwaves was used to adjust the stance as well as provide a smooth ride when cruising. Using his drag racing experience, he welded up a rear ladder bar setup for maximum traction, which incorporates a C-notch for rearend clearance. Four Viair compressors feed a five-gallon tank and allow quick fill-ups. Mixing in some street style to his performance machine, Jose wrapped 24x8.5-inch and 24x15-inch Intro Torino wheels with Pirelli 265/30R24 and 405/25R24 rubber, respectively. Once those rear Pirelli tires get warmed up, they hook hard and provide a 17-inch contact patch for much-needed traction.

Swapping out the factory 4.8L, Jose dropped in a 6.2L LS3 crate motor from GM. He then installed an LS9 cam with 211/230 degrees of duration and .558/.552 inches of lift, while a March Performance pulley kit keeps everything spinning. To add rocket ship-like power, a Whipple supercharger, complete with intercooler and heat exchanger, was bolted to the top of the engine providing a solid 9 psi of boost. All said and done, this setup pumps out 680 tire-melting horsepower thanks to a tune by Jake Brown, of Brown Speed. Keeping the engine nice and cool during those hot summer days, a pair on electric fans was added. Polished valve covers can easily be seen thanks to the coils being relocated to the backside of the motor mounts. Adding some ponies to the small-block, a set of Pace Setter 1 ¾-inch long-tube headers were installed with a 3-inch Magnaflow muffler providing the notification to all that this is no stock engine. The factory driveshaft would be pretzeled with that much power, so Jose had Houston Driveline build a custom shaft and perfectly balance it for minimal vibration. The driveline feeds the power to the narrowed Chevy 12-bolt rearend to spin the 15-inch wide rear wheels.

With the suspension and driveline handled, Jose dropped off his Chevy with Niko Alaniz at Da Shop in Baytown, Texas. While in Niko's care, the front clip was replaced with that of a 2011 HD. The gas filler was shaved and a fuel cell with high-flow fuel pump was dropped into the bed. To match the front bumper, an HD rear bumper was added and the whole truck was prepped for paint. Several coats of PPG Stealth Gray Metallic paint were sprayed over the entire truck. Jose then had Chuck Coupland of Coupland Signs in LaPorte, Texas, airbrush ‘Cheyenne' on each side of the truck. To finish off the bed, sheetmetal wheel tubs and a bridge were fabricated and a color-matched bedliner was sprayed for style and utility.

Jose then started working on creating a functional, yet stylish interior. First thing was to remove all of the plastic dash pieces and paint them body color. The bucket seats were wrapped in black leather and alligator skin. Interior by Design, in Houston, built a custom center console that houses the air-ride controller and the JL Audio 12-inch subwoofer. Finally, an Intro Torino half-wrap steering wheel was installed and the headliner was wrapped in suede. Providing the signals for the audio is a Pioneer touchscreen head unit. JL Audio was used for the rest of audio, as two JL amps feed the JL sub and four 6½-inch coaxial speakers.
Jose is extremely pleased with his truck and takes it to as many shows as possible. It made its west coast debut at the 2011 SEMA show in the Truckin booth where people from all over the world applauded his combination of custom styling and the need for speed—proof positive you can have the best of both worlds.
