Overkill: Dmitri Millard's Single Cab Duramax Drag Race Truck

Harnessing the Power

Jason ThompsonJul 1, 2012
In the article “Bolting Compound Turbos onto a Duramax LB7” (July ’10), we were at PPE’s shop in Fullerton, California, and showed you the birth of living-legend Dmitri Millard’s dyno-destroying Duramax monster. Since that article, Dmitri has gone on to win our Diesel Power Challenge and countless other dyno and drag race competitions across the country.

Time For Something New
The mostly stock (except the drivetrain) bright-red, four-door Chevy Dmitri calls “Duramini” was just too heavy and had the wrong suspension to harness the power in a drag racing situation. So Dmitri and Custom Auto in Idaho Falls decided to fit a regular-cab pickup with the brand-new combination of a 1,700hp, 2,400-lb-ft engine and a lighter, more adjustable suspension. Dmitri thinks this truck will get him into the 8-second quarter-mile club (his best time is 9.93 seconds). Here’s a Diesel Power exclusive look at what it takes to go 148 mph in the quarter-mile—with a pickup truck.

It was bored 0.040 over and has Mahle forged pistons and Carrillo connecting rods. The CNC-ported cylinder heads from Industrial Injection have the new, screw-in Torque Lock injector cups that replace the problematic stock pressed-fit versions. The fuel system includes two FASS 260-gph lift pumps supporting dual Industrial Injection CP3 injection pumps and 42-lpm, eight-hole injectors. The PPE compound turbocharger kit consists of Garrett GT45X and Garrett GT55 turbos and has proven reliable for all these seasons. Dmitri’s signature direct-port nitrous system has only been used (so far) to give a small shot of N2O to the engine for lighting the turbocharger.
