When we ran across Johnny Haislip’s fast 6.0L at the 2012 TS Outlaw Race in Bowling Green, Kentucky, we were surprised that the truck seemed deceptively simple. The fact that it runs mid-12s in the quarter-mile at 8,000 pounds and produces an estimated 650 rwhp got our attention. And since it’s a clean daily driver built on a budget, that sealed the deal.

Johnny originally purchased his 6.0L with only 40,000 miles on it from his father, and since he knew the history of the truck, it made him feel even better about hot-rodding it. First came the reliability pieces: a Sinister Diesel EGR delete, oil cooler relocation from Maryland Diesel Performance, and ARP head studs. At that time, the truck had an SCT tuner with Innovative Diesel tunes, and it was able to make 13-second quarter-mile passes with ease. But, like most diesel enthusiasts, Johnny wanted more.

With the help of Maryland Diesel Performance, the truck went under a very quick transformation. A fuel system was added featuring an Aeromotive Eliminator series pump and Driven Diesel regulated return line. Next, a set of 285cc MDP injectors went in, along with an S472 turbo from Bullseye Performance. The truck felt fast, but after an evening of fooling around, the stock 5R110 five-speed transmission had enough and called it quits. A Maryland Diesel Performance-built 4R100 with a BTS converter was quickly swapped in, and Johnny was back on track.

Right before the TS event, Johnny ran a blistering 12.5- second pass in the quarter-mile—more than a second quicker than before—fast enough to smoke most sports cars. The fact that Johnny still drives his truck on the street every day means he gets plenty of seat time in his 8,000-pound sleeper. And with 80,000 miles on the clock, he’s just getting started!
