Seeing a custom-painted, show-worthy two-door Tahoe blast around our track was enough to stir a tear in our eyes, but for Kurt Grimes of Clovis, California, that's why he built the '96 Chevy. Competing in last year's event, he broke a U-joint strap doing a burnout and had to play catch-up thereafter. Vowing to come back stronger and faster, Kurt made good with his promise by way of a built 6.0L with West Coast Stage 2 aluminum heads, a 2.9L Whipple supercharger, and a custom DG Performance tune. That combo provided 750 hp on the engine dyno, and with a 4,500-pound curb weight, the Tahoe should have been good for mid-to-high 11-second quarter-mile timeslips. However, the day before THROWDOWN presented by Airaid, Kurt torpedoed the 700-R4 transmission and scrambled to get a built 4L80 dialed in before making the drive down to SoCal. Despite the challenges, Kurt proved that strong will and determination can in fact make up for mechanical issues. His unique, handbuilt suspension with rear cantilevered truck arm and coilovers received thumbs up from everyone who stuck their head under the truck, and it proved fully functional as the truck excelled in the race class slalom course and won the quarter-mile drag race. Driving the wheels off of the truck all day, Kurt's Tahoe proved to be an admirable competitor overshadowed only by a no-holds-barred race truck.
