Hooray For Smuggling

There isn't a car or truck model around that Shawn Robinson can't figure his way around. He's built more than his fair share of vehicles, but when he found himself ready to get back into minitrucks, he wanted something low down and dirty.
Placing the style of Shawn's Mazda into a readymade category would be tough. It has those "Rat rod" influences for sure, but that term is way too played out and is a little on the lame side. The interior is way too nice to be in a "Rat" anyway. The truck does have a loose theme, but it doesn't really have enough to be considered a "themed" build. The wooden wine barrel in the bed, shift knob, and cork plugging up the top of a front fender are all that could be tied together if finding a common denominator was necessary. Now, where does this leave us? Hell if we know. Instead of guessing and making up some stupid term that isn't even close to what Shawn had envisioned, and to avoid pissing him off, we just asked what he thought. Here's what we got from him, "I just didn't want to spend a bunch of money on more paint and bodywork. This way, I can take the truck anywhere and not having to worry about damage. Plus, it looks cool as hell." Still without a definitive answer, we'll chalk this one up to being a low maintenance specimen—plain and simple. It's good for trucks, and even better for women.
Just like the nickname Shawn gave his truck, he did a bit of bootlegging of ideas to make the Mazda what it has become. "One day I was hanging out with some good friends, and the suggestion of using a wine barrel in the bed came up. I went right out and bought the wood, metal, and tubes to make it happen." The art on the hood is taken straight from the world of rodding, but it's a given that pinstriping will look good on anything. "I wanted something big and old school, so naturally a Von Dutch flying eyeball was the way to go. My friend and artist Robert "Big" Johnson had the hood for a weekend, and the work he put in on the piece is better than I could've imagined." And as far as the interior, hands down one of this truck's shining highlights, Shawn went for surefire, classic appeal. "I chose Julio Tornero of Interiors By Design to make a creative, yet subtle space for the Mazda. He kept it old looking but kept it different. The distressed leather and tweed combo works perfect together."
There you have it—a mini with a unique and original style all its own. It is what it is, as well as what it isn't. It isn't aiming to impress anybody, including YOU, and that's what we like about it.
"I just didn't want to spend a bunch of money on more paint and bodywork."
