As a successful NASCAR driver accustomed to turning left at 200 mph, Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle is no stranger to pushing the limits of speed, skill, and all-out performance. When it came time to build an off-road-worthy truck to blast around in, Greg looked no further than Ford's toughest off-road rig, the SVT Raptor. Greg was the recipient of the first 6.2L-powered Raptor to leave the assembly line, but despite the factory rating of 411 horsepower sounding like a big number, when your 9-5 job is driving 800-plus horsepower racecars, it simply wasn't enough. To get Greg's adrenaline stirring, he ordered a full array of power, styling, and functional bolt-ons for the brand-new pickup. Once the truck was delivered, it underwent a bevy of modifications that would quickly transform this Raptor into a show-worthy truck, however we found that it feels more at home kicking up a rooster tail of dust for anyone trying to keep up with this blown Blue Oval.
Like any good blue-blooded racecar driver, Greg felt the need for speed. Checking out all of the parts offered by long-time Ford supplier Roush Performance, he went on a quick shopping spree and picked up everything available. The crown jewel is the 2300TVS Roushcharger that pumps 7 psi into the SOHC 6.2L and helps the V-8 churn out 525 hp and 535 lb-ft of torque. Complete down to the last nut and bolt, the Roushcharger also includes a new twin 60mm throttle body, 47-pound injectors, and ECU calibration. Helping the supercharger receive maximum cool air, a Roush high-flow intake replaces the factory unit. With more air going into the engine, a Roush after-cat exhaust system helps expel the burnt gases and provides an audible tone that can only be described as rowdy.
Not to be outdone by the 114 hp increase, Greg also addressed the Raptor's off-road readiness. Gone are the 35-inch BFG all-terrain tires and 17-inch factory wheels and in their stead are 35-inch BFG Mud Terrain T/A KM2 tires and 18-inch V-TEC black wheels. Up front, Jim Smith and his team at Street Customs and Restorations, in Mooresville, North Carolina installed a Ford Racing light bar that houses four KC HID lights, while in the bed, an A.D.D. bed brace serves as the mounting point for the 50-inch RIGID LED lightbar and 42-inch rear-facing lightbar. Incorporating the Raptor's factory-installed auxiliary switch panel in the center console, each light is easily activated at a moments notice. Out back, the tailgate was removed and a Ford Racing/Tire Gate tire carrier was installed. The look is pure off-road, while the function meets all of Greg's needs.
Stepping back from the Raptor, the only thing left to do was really make it stand out in a crowd of other dirt-loving Ford trucks. Street Custom and Restorations also handled the Sherwin-Williams paint with vibrant Planet Colors' hues of Red Hot Chili Pepper, Snow White, and Matte Black. Found inside the Snow White, the number 16 was ghosted into the pigment leaving no doubt who drives this bad boy. Peering inside the Super Cab, custom-stitched headrests identify the Roush Off Road brand, while a Roush boost gauge is mounted inside a Roush housing that fits inside the driver-side A/C vent. The vent gauge looks awesome and easily displays how much boost the 6.2L is churning out.
Ready to rock and roll, Biffle's Raptor is a roaring example of off-the-shelf parts working together to transform a factory skunk works truck into an off-road beast.
