The word "minitruck" is not a term taken too seriously in some circles of customizers. Try walking into a few high-end hot rod shops in your area and tell them you're looking for help building an S-10 or a Hardbody. You might get one or two guys who understand the potential these little haulers possess and show genuine interest in your project, but more than likely you'll get a head nod out and a "sounds cool" out of pity. For argument's sake, let's say you show up to these same shops in a truck like Cory Hussey's Colorado and strike up the same conversation. The odds of receiving undivided attention from the dude behind the counter are likely to quadruple—at least.
Now, what does this say about how others perceive the passion for our vehicles of choice? More often than not, most shop owners see the youthful faces and associate them with big dreams and shallow pockets. According to what Cory has told us about the seven years he's spent crafting his truck, this is what he faced the whole way through. "The worst part about the build was dealing with all the "custom shops" not understanding the level of truck I was creating. A lot of people don't take young minitruckers serious around my area. I've spent the last few years trying to prove them wrong."
Proving the doubters and naysayers wrong when the chips are stacked against you isn't the easiest of positions to be in, but it's the best one to find yourself in if you have nothing but determination and fire blazing deep down inside. "I purchased the truck as pieces and built it from the ground up. I only used the cab, box, and body panels, and constructed the chassis, did all the body mods, assembled 90-percent of the truck, then tore it all back down to paint everything. I saw shops come and go, but I stuck to my guns, and pieced together the truck of my dreams."
It's safe to assume that a lot of big mouths were slammed shut with the completion of this project. Cory doesn't come off to be a spiteful person, but damn it must felt great to show what a young punk is capable of making out of such a "lowbrow" vehicle. "I learned a lot from these seven years—stuff that will carry over to a new build one day. Meeting the people that I have in that time is something that I will always remember. I pushed extra hard to have the truck finished for my wedding last year. It blew a 'bag on the way to the ceremony, so my friends shoved me into a limo, and they spent the next hour fixing it. The truck showed up five minutes before the ceremony started. To have the people I love by my side, to marry the love of my life, and to have the truck there completed for the occasion was a dream come true.".
"I've spent the last few years trying to prove them wrong."
