“And in the first round, 29th pick overall of the 2009 draft, the New York Yankees select Slade Heathcott out of Texas.”
Those were the words spoken by the commissioner of Major League Baseball. It was the greatest day of the now 21-one-year-old slugger’s life. It was a long road to get to his dream, and bittersweet, too. As a troubled teen in Texarkana, Texas, Slade was constantly looking for guidance to help with his immense talent on the field. Now in the Minor League system waiting for his call up to the big show, he spends a lot of his time reflecting on his mistakes and thanking God for his second chance.
While some players focus on Sportscenter in the clubhouse or text message people, Slade speaks about his hellish high school years with eloquence even more impressive than his .351 batting average. “I hope to inspire people, particularly kids, through my journey of salvation,” Slade tells us. “I know this is a process, something I might never reach but always strive for.” This is amazing from a Slade who countered his high school anger by drinking. The New York Yankees sent him to Alcoholics Anonymous, and that was the start of his miraculous new leaf.

"To begin his turnaround, Slade purchased an ’09 Ford F-250, but within days he was searching for a way to make it unique."
To begin his turnaround, Slade purchased an ’09 Ford F-250, but within days he was searching for a way to make it as unique as his life. He turned to Tony Stanko of Tony’s Total Performance out of Largo, Florida, which is just minutes from the Yankees Minor League practice facility in Tampa. After a brief meeting, Tony and Slade put their ideas to work, and the truck began its transformation. After about six months, The Shadow was ready to be debuted and was a home run when Slade arrived at the stadium. “It’s big, bold, and commands attention,” a teammate says. “Just like Slade!” If anything could be built to resemble Slade’s personality, it’s his high-rising Ford.

Slade told his mother not too long ago, “Mom, I wouldn’t change anything, because it made me the person I am now.”
“As a mom, that was hard to hear,” his mother Kimberly Johnson says, pausing to fight back tears. “But I’m so proud of him.” As someone who has overcome every obstacle in his way, Slade has a chance to be a household name for every sports fan across the globe. Along with his one-of-a-kind Ford, Slade Heathcott has stepped out of the shadows and made a huge impact.
