America's workforce is dependent on trucks. From big rigs hauling in goods from the ports, 1-ton dualies towing large loads to construction sites, and ½-ton trucks serving small-business owners everywhere, trucks keep food on the shelves, clothes on our backs, and money in our pockets. When the security experts at Master Lock approached us to build the "Ultimate F-150 Work Truck," we graciously accepted the challenge and quickly got to work designing a pickup properly suited for the skilled craftsman who wants to stand out in a crowd of other truck owners in the Home Depot parking lot. Before the keys were even in hand, Master Lock explained to us we'd be building a giveaway truck that would be won by a fortunate sweepstakes winner. Honored to be chosen as the builder of such a special prize, we expressed our vision to rendering pro Tavis Highlander. After he nailed the digital rendition of the F-150, we rolled the F-150 Super Cab into our Tech Center and started the transformation.

First and foremost, work trucks need to be unapologetically functional. We tackled the F-150's bed area by having the pros at 714 Motorsports spray the entire bed surface with rugged Bullet Liner. Once the BedSlide 1000PRO SE was bolted in place, we added a Paramount Restyling professional contractor's rack and Dee Zee Blue Label toolbox. The Ford now had the meat, but it was missing the potatoes. Harbor Freight was then sourced to fill the toolbox with essential contractor tools, including a 4,000-watt, California emissions–compliant generator, forged vise, and multifunction ladder. To protect all of the equipment, we outfitted the ½-ton with Master Lock's full arsenal of work truck security gear. Master Lock's latest work truck protection includes U-locks for bed stake pockets and bed cleats, Track Lock for factory-equipped utility rail systems, ladder locks, cable locks, and a Hitch Vault kit. Confident we had a capable work area in the bed, we switched our focus to making the truck look and perform better.

To give the Ford a better stance, we installed a full complement of Ready Lift components, including a 2.5-inch strut spacer, Uniball upper A-arms, and heavy-duty steering endlinks. Thirty-four-inch Nitto Terra Grappler all-terrain tires were then mounted to 20-inch Fuel Off-Road Maverick two-piece wheels. The fitment is dead-on and the good looks turn heads without being too flashy. Towing is part of a work truck's impressive repertoire and a Firestone Ride-Rite helper airbag kit along with Hellwig antisway bars ensure the SuperCab is prepared for anything. Helping to further separate the Ultimate F-150 Work Truck from the crowd, we bolted on front and rear Flog Industries off-road bumpers. These killer bumpers incorporate the factory foglights and rear hitch, and serve as the perfect mounting location for the Anzo HID off-road lights and Smittybilt D-rings. We ditched the factory lights in favor of black projector units, also from Anzo, and while we were at it, swapped the chrome grille for a black mesh piece from Paramount Restyling. Our leading edge is super-aggressive and yet 100 percent functional—just like a real truck should be.

Punctuality is vital to maintaining a professional appearance, and to help get the fortunate winner to the jobsite quickly, we selected a few bolt-ons for more power. Helping the 5.0L V-8 breathe easier, we added a Volant cool-air intake with scoop, long-tube headers and stainless exhaust from American Racing Headers, and a Bully Dog GT tuner for optimized engine performance. Continuing with the form-meets-function philosophy, we covered the seats with durable Coverking covers with MOLLE webbing and storage pouches. Transforming the interior into a mobile office, we installed a Dee Zee RAM mount for a laptop along with a 750-watt power inverter from Harbor Freight. A wireless digital controller for the Firestone Ride Rite helper 'bags is stealthily contained in the center console for easy height adjustments. Finally, we added a 50-inch Anzo LED light bar facing forward on the ladder rack to light up the jobsite and two 4-inch LED spotlights facing rearward for instant bed visibility.

We enjoyed building the Master Lock Ultimate F-150 Work Truck, so much so, we hated to see it leave after its debut at the 2012 SEMA show. Since the sweepstakes expired, we heard from Master Lock that a woman in North Carolina won the truck. We hope she knows her way around a jobsite, because with the keys to this truck in hand, all you need is the personal know-how to get the job done right.
