Getting Airborne While Tipping the Scales at 7,300 Pounds
Raptors, white-fiberglass-fender-equipped Rangers, and even a few Jeeps typically get all the glory while blasting around the whoops, dunes, and sandy playgrounds across the country. “Carbon-fiber,” “prerunner,” and “bicycle racks” aren’t words typically associated with a ¾-ton Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel, but for Nic Ashby of LDRSHIP Designs in Temecula, California, building something outside the traditional box is part of his daily routine. With several imports, small econo-cars, and Jeep builds to his credit, when Nic expanded his repertoire into full-size trucks, he did so using unconventional methods.
Resting on an 8-inch long-travel lift kit from CST Suspension with CST 2.0 reservoir-shocks, 37-inch Toyo M/Ts on beadlock Walker Evans wheels, and N-Fab off-road bumpers, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD looks ready for the desert. Separating his Chevy even more from the norm are Fiberwerx carbon-fiber fenders and bedsides. A matte-black wrap with tank graphics gives it a menacing look, while the Yakima bike racks in the bed are set up for Giant off-road bicycles. It’s a big beast -- and a truck we’d love to get airborne.
Nic also beefed up the Duramax diesel by way of improved cooling with Mishimoto products. These include a new oil cooler, transmission cooler, upgraded intercooler for the turbo, and stronger silicone hoses that hold up better to the diesel’s extreme temps. A Bully Dog tuner, K&N intake, and Magnaflow exhaust free up some ponies lost from the big tires. Out back, a tire carrier from TireGate allows quick access to a mounted and balanced spare tire combo in case there is a tire damaged when off-roading.
A barrage of Anzo lights illuminates any off-road trail and includes four 9-inch HID lights up front, 4½-inch LED lights, and LED headlights and taillights. Splitting the Chevy’s Bow Tie is a T-Rex X-Metal grille that matches the powdercoated wheels.
This isn’t your traditional prerunner, and that’s exactly why we like it so much. Tow and go is a common custom truck mantra, but for this Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, there’s no terrain too tough to have a good time.
Powdercoated 20-inch Walker Evans beadlock wheels are securely mounted inside 37-inch Toyo Open Country M/T tires. A nice touch is the gold powdercoated beadlock ring that offsets the dark wrap and carbon-fiber body panels. The bypass CST shocks can also be seen mounted inside the fender.
