2013 Ford F-350 Lariat Super Duty - The High Roller
Luxury Has a Home in the Dirt
The concept for this SEMA build from the fine folks at Cars by Kris was to build a truck that would be a capable off-road vehicle, yet still be luxurious and stylish. To accomplish such a high-end build on the new F-350 would surely take an army due to the always fun SEMA build deadlines.
When we caught up with Kris Horton to chat about this build we wanted to get the story firsthand from the owner/builder, so we picked his brain about the build. We asked him what set this build apart from his past SEMA builds and Kris shared, “I really wanted this truck to be as capable off-road as it is on-road, so the guys at Carli Suspension had their work cut out for them. I also wanted the interior to feel like the inside of a European luxury sedan so Deluxe Interiors completely reupholstered the cabin using smooth Nappa Leather, Alcantara, along with unique hexagon stitching to add some extra flair.”
So after mapping out a plan, it was the build partners who would come to the rescue to create the ultimate in off-road luxury in a matter of only a few months time. That’s what makes SEMA builds so difficult—not the crazy amount of mods needed, or the over-the-top custom creations, but rather, if you’re missing a part and it holds up your entire build for two weeks, then disaster can very easily snatch up another SEMA victim. This is why it takes such a dedicated and professional crew to work through all the problems as they arise, and make it happen—no matter what!
We asked Kris what his favorite mods were in this build and he mentioned, “The Carli Suspension is hands down my favorite mod. The truck rides so smooth; it’s truly unbelievable. It has completely changed my opinion on how lifted trucks should ride. My second-favorite mod would probably be the Banks water/meth injection, which is just awesome!” The perfect recipe for any build generally includes part “show” and part “go” and the go is usually the most fun, especially when we’re talking a ’13 6.7L PowerStroke with Banks Straight-Shot water/methanol injection!
Kris did most of the wrenching with his wife, Jade, at their buddy’s shop in Chino, California. Ron and Casey Scranton from CGS definitely know a thing or two about high-end SEMA builds with such strict deadlines, so they were more than happy to assist. After Carli Suspension had the altitude adjustment handled and sitting just right on the 22x12 American Force Wheels wrapped in 37x13.5 Toyo rubber, it was time to plan out the body and paint design. Kris shared, “Theresa at LGE/CTS worked with me for three days to lay out the paint scheme and they did an amazing job with painting the truck to match our design perfectly.” We’ve worked with the crew at LGE on several projects, so we definitely know that their expertise always comes through in a pinch—and the quality of work is always top notch.
So with the suspension, performance, paint, and interior wrapped up in just shy of four months flat Kris was well on his way to SEMA and had completed the Ford F-350 build before his deadline—which is almost unheard of in our industry. It just goes to show you how important having the right build team and partners can be. They can either make or break a build, especially when the clock is ticking, and for Kris his great group of partners and friends definitely pulled through. He also shared with us, “Overall, this was one of the smoothest builds I’ve ever done. Everyone involved was very professional and a true pleasure to work with. They did what they said they were going to do, and met our deadlines while still delivering high-quality work. Any builder knows that working with the right people on a project makes all the difference!” And there you have it, just like we said.
Kris wanted to send out a personal thank you to everyone who made this build possible. “We had a lot of help on this build from companies and shops including: Ford Motor Co., American Force Wheels, Toyo Tires, Carli Suspension, MagnaFlow, LGE/CTS, Deluxe Interiors, Banks Power, King Shocks, Lund, Plain an Simple By Design, Rigid Industries, The Retrofit Source, MagHytec, Recon Lights, Bedrug, Leer, Deaver Springs, Axalta Coating, and others—but it really wouldn’t have been possible without our friends at CGS Motorsports as they lent me the space to work and were a never-ending source of encouragement, advice, and good times. Also, Robert Henry, Brett Oakes, and Henry Manh for all of their help with the build—and most of all I want to thank my wife, Jade, who not only helped me plan the project and keep it on track, she also turned wrenches along the way!”
