Building custom trucks may not be a regional thing, as builders make their home all over the world using their local influences as inspiration for what takes shape in the end. Some builders try to outdo their last build, others want to make a statement, and some like to show what can be done with a particular model. In the case of Shawn Helmer, he wanted to show the custom world that a small builder from Canada has the talent to create show-quality trucks.
Hanging his hat at Speedtech Racing in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, since ’07, Shawn has been in the truck-building game for a few years now and has built up quite a reputation north of the border. This time he wanted to take a ’12 F-350 Power Stroke and make it into a real showstopper. Having put out several high-quality builds, Shawn is no stranger to how a truck should go together, and being around the pros over at Speedtech also helps. Starting with the look, Shawn wanted to go with a color scheme that he had not seen before. A matte gray wrap was finally decided on and laid down at Sharp Auto Trim in Saskatoon.
He then set to work on the suspension pieces spraying them in gold finish. The sway bars, shock mounts, ’bag mounts, shock brackets, axle-mounting brackets, steering stabilizer bracket, endlinks, and differential all got shined up courtesy of Novakoski, also in Saskatoon. The Novakoski people also turned their spray gun to the inside of the cab to spray the center console, inner vent areas, window control buckets, and cupholder shroud a nice matte gray to match the exterior. The outermost A/C ducts were sprayed metallic silver to set off the colors.

The 6.7L powerplant was humming along just fine, but Shawn decided to add in an H&S Performance Mini Maxx tuner for some electronic control, a Sinister EGR and Cooler delete kit ’cause the emissions laws are different in Canada, an AFE Stage 2 Intake for more cool air, a turbo-back straight pipe 5-inch Flo Pro Exhaust to really roll some coal, and a Fass Fuel Air Separation System to keep the fuel as clean as possible.
The body received a little face-lift from Bushwacker fender flares, with Recon LED headlights, Rigid Industries lights front and rear, and a winch-ready bumper from Fusion. The bed is all nice and snug with a BedRug liner that has a nice view of the BAKFlip tonneau cover.
Having a long-time relationship with Kelderman made it a natural fit for one of their lofty 8/10-inch lift kits, with help from Fox 2.0 shocks, an AccuAir system keeps things nice and level, while 2 Viair compressors provide the air power to fill up two 3-gallon tanks.

The wheels came from Fuel and are Full Blown 24 inchers (that received the same gold finish as the suspension), which have 40/14.5/24 Interco M16s on them.
“I like building trucks that are tough, usable, and look good. Nothing too crazy lookin’, ya know? Something that you can drive every day. Being a part of the custom community gives me the opportunity to sit back, see what I want the truck to look like, and really put on the right parts to make it work,” Shawn says. “I also wanted to break the barriers a little to show that Canadians can build some damn fine trucks.”
Shawn has certainly taught us that our neighbors to the North know their way around a truck build better than they know maple syrup and Zambonis.
