Don’t let the classic inline-six layout of the all-new MAN D3876 fool you. This 15.2L truck engine is packed with the latest in diesel technology to make it powerful, efficient, and clean enough to pass strict Euro 6 emissions standards. In the configuration you see here, the D3876 makes 640 hp and a massive 2,213 lb-ft of torque, which starts peaking at just 930 rpm.
In addition to two-stage turbocharging, the engine uses “intermediate charge cooling” that employs two air-to-water intercoolers—one after the first turbocharger, and another after the second turbo. MAN says this design can lower the charge air temperature to the point that it’s actually cooler than the engine coolant. The D3876 engine also uses what the company calls “top-down cooling,” which pumps coolant through the areas housing the injectors and the exhaust valve seats before the rest of the engine.
Photo 2/3   |   The CGI head of the D3876 has four valves per cylinder operated by a single overhead camshaft. To help it meet strict Euro 6 emissions requirements, the engine uses not one, but two exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) coolers mounted in series, along with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system with urea injection.
Both the block and the cylinder head are made from compacted graphite iron (CGI) that is relatively lightweight and allows the engine to handle injection pressures as high as 36,000 psi (the high pressures are used to keep fuel consumption and emissions low). There are eight cylinder head bolts around each bore, along with factory fire rings to help deal with those high pressures. Forged steel construction of the pistons allows for a low-compression height and long connecting rods for low-friction losses against the cylinder walls. Weight-saving features include an aluminum flywheel that weighs about 73 pounds less than the previous design, a plastic rocker cover, and a plastic oil sump with a patented spiderweb structure to diffuse engine noise.
Two-stage EGR cooling, a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with urea injection are used to help meet the Euro 6 emissions standards. An engine-powered, two-cylinder air compressor runs air brakes and other systems, and it is designed to shut off whenever the system is not needed, which increases operating efficiency by up to 90 percent compared to a compressor that runs constantly. Efficiency is also maximized with an advanced exhaust brake that provides up to 805 hp of stopping power, which MAN says can be used continuously without significantly impacting the engine cooling system.
