Transforming a Stock 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500HD in Record Time

How Chad Hall’s 2015 Silverado 2500HD Morphed from Stone Stock to Ultimate Tow Rig in Less than a Year!

“When I bought the truck (a ’15 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD), I told myself and everyone else it was ‘staying stock.’ About 4,000 miles later, Edge Products came out with tuning for the 6.6L Duramax LML and my ‘stock’ truck became another project.” It was at this point that Chad Hall, the owner of Alligator Performance in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, got together with Chris Rosscup at Deviant Race Parts (DRP) and came up with a plan to make his Silverado the ultimate tow rig.
"So far, I am stoked that my truck has come this far in a really short timeframe (a little less than a year) -Chad says."
Chad says the build started with a few basic add-ons, “like a 4-inch dual exhaust from AFE, an Edge Insight CTS to monitor the engine, and an AFE air filter.” However, due to the fact that any ultimate tow rig needs plenty of power, Chad and Chris put the plan in motion to develop a compound-turbocharger system for the LML platform. “I believe it’s the second ’15 Duramax [at that time] to have compounds, and the setup is perfect because it maintains driveability—but with the ability to tow great with that awesome increase of power on tap,” says Chris, who actually constructed the kit.

The owner, Chad Hall, started with some basic tuning, then simply handed it over to Chris Rosscup at Deviant Race Parts (DRP), where it became a development platform for a Duramax 6.6L LML-based compound-turbo system.
The Deviant turbo system on this truck uses an S475 turbo from High Tech Turbo on top of the stock ’charger and retains stock injectors, but the Deviant is being further developed before release to the public.
The initial compound setup was fueled by an ATS Diesel Performance Twin Fuel kit, which supports a stock CP4.2 injection pump. Primary fuel delivery comes from a FASS Titanium 150-gph lift pump drawing from a Diesel Race Parts fuel tank sump. Chad says that eventually “the CP4.2 decided it wasn't happy with the workload and quit, so Fleece Performance Engineering sent us one of its CP3 conversion kits with a new, stock CP3. After that, a little EFILive tuning from MotorOps made the combination of components very happy, with a respectable 650hp race tune and a 520hp tow tune. The fueling upgrade made off-idle throttle response better and gave me more peace of mind, as the tried-and-true CP3 is much more reliable.”

The stock Allison six-speed automatic transmission was already starting to slip when it was pulled out and handed over to Dmitri Millard at No Zone Diesel. Dmitri installed SunCoast’s clutches and torque converter, and an ATS Co-Pilot to help make the transmission’s shifts more firm. DRP’s custom replacement transmission cooler lines were also added. PPE Diesel’s larger differential cover helps keep the gears cool. The truck rolls on 20x9 Fuel Lethal wheels and 305/55R20 Toyo Open Country AT II tires, with CalTracs traction bars onboard to keep wheelhop to a minimum. In addition to the performance mods the truck received, CST Performance Suspension set Chad up with a 3-inch leveling kit that includes forged torsion keys and CST’s dual remote-reservoir shocks up front to smooth out the bumps. At the front, Rare Parts G2 heavy-duty tie rods and Cognito pitman and idler arm supports help manage toe-in during off-road conditions. Pacbrake airbags keep the tow rig from squatting when the 32-foot race trailer is hooked up to the gooseneck hitch.
The truck is still a daily driven work rig. It has AMP Research electric side steps to help Chad and passengers climb inside, where the only aftermarket addition is a set of WeatherTech floor mats. Hayden, Idaho–based Vinyl Fire printed Alligator Performance logos along the outside, and a flat black wrap up front is used to effectively delete some of the chrome.
When this big Chevy isn’t towing, the bed is topped off with a Leer canopy and Thule cargo rack.

Photo 5/38   |   While monitoring the critical functions of any diesel engine is important, keeping a close eye on the functions of an all-new compound setup—as it is being developed—is even more imperative. In lieu of using gauges for this, Chad chose an Edge Insight CTS and mounted it right on the A pillar so it’s just a glance away.
