Drop Zone 2004 - Custom Truck Show
Magical Minis Northwest Bash
Drop Zone 2004 was held at the Oregon State fairgrounds in Salem, Oregon, on June 25-27. This was the first trip we'd made to the show, so we weren't quite sure what to expect. As soon as we arrived on Friday, however, we knew that the 13-hour drive was going to prove well worth it. We found cool trucks, cool people, and more than enough things going on to keep us occupied all weekend long.
Events had been scheduled late into the night to keep the crowd busy. These events included a burnout contest, a hop-off, the ever-famous wet T-shirt contest, a drag-it-off competition, and many others, along with club games and competitions. The best event had to be the drag contest, where mini-truckers competed to see who could throw the most sparks for the cheering crowd. Since most venues don't allow dragging, this event was a huge hit for everybody.
The show attracted rides from all different stages of the buildup phase. A funny thing that we picked up on was the number of roadstered minis. There were a lot more than most California shows, yet it rains too much in the Northwest to be rolling around in a convertible truck. There were also a lot of Mazdas that had some really cool modifications, from super-shortened beds to full-on chop-tops with sheetmetal interiors. There was plenty there to keep us busy shooting show coverage, features, and Construction Zone minis all day Saturday and Sunday.
The Magical Minis crew doesn't mess around when it comes to throwing a kickass show, but it also know it wouldn't be possible without the help of its sponsors. The members would like to thank everyone who helps make this show bigger and better year after year, including Hot Rod Betties, Innovative Air Suspension, Les Schwab Tires, and many others. This show is not one to be missed, and with dragging allowed, full under-construction classes, and all the things us mini-truckers have grown to love about a show, make sure you mark your calendar for next year's event, or you'll be sorry.
