Hundreds and hundreds of trucks, thousands of people, and a one-of-a-kind diesel atmosphere is how we'd describe the 2009 Scheid Diesel Extravaganza. This was a record-breaking year in both attendance and the number of competitors. The event has come a long way since its creation in 1997, when the sled pull was held behind the Cornerstone Christian Church in Effingham, Illinois. After just three years of hosting the show in Effingham, the massive turnout forced Scheid to move it to its current location.

That location is the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds in Terre Haute, Indiana, where the event has remained since 2000. However, the unreal amount of diesel enthusiasts attending the 2009 show yielded a slight shortage on seating and had a few wondering if it's once again on the verge of outgrowing its venue.
Now, we would never want to jinx an event of this magnitude, but we seriously think it is cursed for rain on Fridays. One day before the event, the optimistic weather forecast faded away as scattered showers and outright downpours moved in and ended all sled pull qualifying on Friday. However, the rain ceased and the nighttime sled pull put on by the Pro Pulling League did go forward as planned. Despite the rain, diesel fans of all walks of life browsed a huge vendor row, saw an impressive array of trucks in the show 'n' shine, and watched big power numbers being made on two chassis dynos.
Saturday saw clear skies filled with black smoke on the pulling track, as 2.6 and 2.8 truck qualifying went on all day, followed by the finals that night. Sunday kicked off bright and early for the outlaw drag races and culminated that evening with impressive side-by-side action. If you haven't yet attended, we highly recommend this massive event-three full days of nonstop diesel performance! Read on for a recap of this year's event.
