The lush, green surroundings of Burlington, North Carolina, make it a great location to kick off Outlaw Diesel Super Series events each season, with Rudy’s Diesel Performance & Offroad’s Diesel Season Opener at Piedmont Dragway leading the way in April 2017.
Piedmont is a great location for the annual two-day throwdown. The eighth-mile dragstrip and sled pull facility is located in Julian, North Carolina, and draws competitors and spectators from all over the East. On both days, ODSS trucks and dragsters blasted down the track to the delight of fans. And when the racing slowed down, folks made their way to the dyno to watch the rollers on Dan’s Diesel Performance’s chassis dyno put trucks to the test. Then, as the evening rolled around, everyone headed down to the sled-pulling track to watch pickups and tractors with over-the-top horsepower attempt to drag the weighted sled the farthest distance.
When there were lulls in the action, the event’s vendor area was packed with diesel devotees, browsing the booths of businesses promoting their wares. The show ’n’ shine took place on Saturday, with a strong collection of vehicles displayed along the dragstrip.
The 2017 Diesel Season Opener definitely didn’t disappoint anyone who attended. It is an amazing event in a great locale, and we can’t wait to head back there for the 2018 season opener.

Saturday’s show ’n’ shine brought a large assortment of vehicles with amazing fit and finish to Piedmont Dragway. The judges certainly had their work cut out for them. With $1,000 going to the overall winner and $300 for the best Dodge, Ford, and GM, many owners were polishing and cleaning their rigs until right before judging started.

Dan’s Diesel Performance’s chassis dyno drew a continuous crowd during the 2017 Diesel Season Opener. Spectators were eager to see what type of numbers participants could muster in the warm spring weather. Tyler Brancifort’s ’11 Ford F-350 posted the highest performance, with 1,422.6 hp and 2,051.9 lb-ft of torque. Second Place on the rollers went to Rusty Cardwell and his ’06 Dodge Ram 2500 with 1,114 hp and 2,104 lb-ft. Clay Stewart, Chris Sheulin, and Freddie Sparks rounded out the top five competitors.

Friday and Saturday night saw some great competition at the sled-pulling track. Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League as well as Carolina Truck and Tractor Pullers were present to provide plenty of mega-horsepower trucks and tractors for spectator enjoyment. Competitors held nothing back, and many pushed their engines beyond their limits, trying to make it to the far end of the track.
