Go With Moon- Straight to Japan- 26th Annual Mooneyes Hot Rod Custom Show
Go With Moon—Straight to Japan
The 26th Annual Mooneyes Hot Rod Custom Show took place this past December at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center way over in Yokohama, Japan. It is the largest indoor custom car and motorcycle show in the country and comes complete with a swap meet and vendor spaces, live bands, a custom paint contest, and a pinstriper’s gathering— all in a one-day show.
Each year, Mooneyes invites a handful of featured American builders and customizers, so while this custom painter was there, it only seemed right to grab some photos for everyone’s favorite truck rag. The hall is packed with vendors selling clothing, vintage items, and chopper and custom car accessories. Among the vast array of items was a limited-edition, one-day-only pair of Vans. It was the most crowded car show we’ve ever been to—it was literally wall to wall people. But the Japanese people are so polite and respectful, it wasn’t even that bad.
The theme was “Grow Together—Sodateyou” meaning “be calm—not loud, preserve our culture”. The Japanese are very big into keeping the peace, not making noise, or making the convention center and surrounding community mad. This made for an awesome event that went off without a hitch. That said, they are definitely not afraid to cut something up, lay it flat, and treat it to a wild paintjob. They are also extremely into the traditional style and respect it to the tee, right down to the last nut and bolt. This was definitely a bucket list kind of show, and it is highly recommended to anyone who has ever thought about attending.
