Extravagance

Like past iterations of the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza, the 21st edition of the annual diesel smorgasbord did not disappoint. Even with a bit of inclement weather making things soggy around the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds, the crowds arrived by the truckloads to experience everything the event had to offer.
Every part of the Scheid experience draws a crowd. At the dyno, large numbers of spectators continually accumulate to watch trucks of all makes and configurations battle the rollers for big-number bragging rights. A steady flow of enthusiasts, buying apparel and inquiring about the products and diesel technology on display, kept the manufacturers’ midway busy for two straight days.
Over at the show ’n’ shine, the outdoor pavilion overflowed with all types of vehicles being displayed. At the north end of the fairgrounds, the Crossroads Dragway drew a huge crowd to take in the sights and sounds of Outlaw Diesel Super Series eighth-mile racing action. As each day’s activities wound down, the evenings heated up at the sled pull track. The grandstands were filled with people ready for the big-horsepower trucks and tractors of the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League.
While walking about the fairgrounds, it’s easy to meet like-minded diesel fans from all over the U.S. and Canada. We believe there’s a good reason why the number of attendees seems to increase each year: Scheid Diesel Service continues to put on a great show that has become the premier happening for diesel enthusiasts everywhere.
Photo 2/66   |   Scheid Diesel Extravaganza is so much more than just an amazing truck show. Heated sled-pull competition and high-speed drag racing action are two of the event’s major attractions.
The vendors were kept busy with a constant flow of people inquiring about their wares. Along with the many parts on display, several custom vehicles were strategically placed about the manufacturers’ midway.
Photo 6/66   |   This all-aluminum engine on display at the Scheid Diesel Service booth is a work in progress. To handle the insane boost pressures found in high-performance diesel engines, the block is made with the same material used for Top Fuel dragster engines.

Show ’n’ Shine

Photo 9/66   |   LinCo Diesel Performance built this beautiful custom ’72 Chevrolet Suburban for a customer who wanted a vehicle for safari-type excursions. The rear factory bench seat and windows were removed. In their place, custom wraparound bench seating (like a ski boat) was installed with a roll cage. Under the ’Burb’s hood lies a 6.6L Duramax engine, Allison automatic transmission, and Chevy drivetrain to motivate this cool rig. An early Ford kingpin-style Dana 60 axle provides front-end beef.
Photo 10/66   |   This beautiful blue and white AMC Gremlin X is definitely not what you would normally spot at a diesel gathering. But with an R2.8L Cummins engine under the hood, it definitely fits the bill. The detail and finish of the car are amazing, and if we didn’t know better it would not be hard to believe the R2.8 was installed at the factory.

A real head-turner at the show ’n’ shine was this International Harvester Farmall tractor with a 5.9L 12-valve Cummins engine. The tractor had been sitting for 20 years with a seized engine when Jeff Gaskin decided he wanted to get it running again. Rebuilding the stock 263ci I-6 would have cost a good chunk of money and yielded a whopping 70 hp. So Jeff decided to go a different route and stuff a used 6BT from an ’89 Dodge Ram pickup under the hood. The conversion required no major modifications, just an engine-to-transmission adapter, a flywheel, motor mounts, some custom plumbing, a throttle cable, and a bit of trimming so the turbocharger would clear the side curtain. The old tractor now has nearly 400 hp that Jeff can’t wait to put to use around the farm.
It is not too uncommon to find a Cummins R2.8L or 4BT under the hood of a Jeep JK. The engines’ size makes them an ideal fit. But coming across a Cummins 6BT with a 47RE transmission and manual valvebody stuffed into a JK is not a normal sight. When Hannah and Cory Wheat decided they wanted to build a diesel-powered Jeep, they had not planned on using a big I-6 engine. But when someone said a 6BT wouldn’t fit, Cory decided to prove them wrong. The build started with a bare frame and body, and after many hours of fabrication and hard work, the couple had the big Jeep rolling down the trail.
The patina of this hot-rod Dodge pickup gives it a lot of character, and the detailing on the matching 5.9L Cummins under the hood is first rate.

Show ’n’ Shine

The Purdue Diesel Club hosted an excellent show ’n’shine at Scheid Diesel Extravaganza 2018. The event took place under the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds outdoor pavilion. There was no shortage of vehicles Friday and Saturday, with a cool, diverse mixture of new, old, and custom creations on display that attracted a continuous crowd of onlookers.

Dyno Shootout

Photo 31/66   |   The owner of this truck made the trip from Texas to SDX ’18 and was not going to pass up a chance to see what his Ford could do on the Diesel Doctor chassis dyno. With more than 1,000 hp becoming more common, the guys at Diesel Doctor decided to add a protective shield to each side of the dyno to keep bystanders safe if a driveshaft decides to let go on a pull.
Photo 32/66   |   The dyno rules at Scheid were put in place to give the average truck owner a fighting chance at winning the competition.

Dyno Shootout

“Diesel Doctor” Robert Pierce and his team provided the lone chassis dyno for the SDX 2018 horsepower competition sponsored by Edge Products. A broad spectrum of trucks that included everything from early-’90s Dodge and Chevrolet rigs to those that looked like they were fresh from the showroom were strapped to the rollers over the two-day power test. Some of the most unassuming rigs put down surprisingly big numbers to the delight of the crowd. Mike Maas placed First and Second on Friday with his ’03 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. His truck’s first run yielded 1,208 hp (Second Place); disappointed with that number, Mike hit the rollers again and the Silverado responded with 1,237 hp. On Saturday, Joe Drutoski’s ’06 Ford F-250 won top honors of the day with 1,019 hp. A bit behind him in Second Place was Keith Burwinkel’s ’07 Dodge Ram 3500 with 968 hp.

Sled Pull

The crew at the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League was ready for the passing storms that dropped rain on Friday and Saturday. The track was covered in plastic tarps to keep the dirt as dry as possible. When the weather cleared, the maintenance team jumped into action to get the dirt properly prepped for the evening’s tournament of power.

Sled Pull

The biggest crowd draw at Scheid Diesel Extravaganza year after year is the two nights of truck and tractor sled pulling. Downpours of rain didn’t discourage enthusiasts from making it out to the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League competition. The Lucas Oil crew are no strangers to rain and covered the track to keep it as dry as possible. They had no issues getting the track prepped and ready for start time. Fans were given a great show Friday, with seven different classes competing, followed by eight on Saturday. All competitors in each class came ready to give it everything in the hunt for their respective points championships.

Drag Race

Photo 54/66   |   Despite getting a late start this season, “Lightning” Larson Miller is running roughshod over the SunCoast Diesel Transmission Pro Mod Class in 2018. Larson’s Firepunk Diesel–prepared ’00 Chevrolet S-10 posted mid-4-second e.t.’s throughout eliminations and carried Larson to the final round—and victory over Steve Royalty.
Photo 55/66   |   Landon Miller was all over the podium during the Scheid weekend, with a victory in Flo-Pro Performance Exhaust 6.70 Index at the end of Saturday’s eliminations marathon, and then winning performances in Jamo Performance Exhaust E.T. Bracket and the ATS Diesel Performance/Diesel Power Magazine 7.70 Index the following day.

Photo 64/66   |   Firepunk Diesel 5.90 Index is fast becoming one of the most exciting eliminators in the ODSS. Rick Fox led the pack at Crossroads Dragway, defeating Paul Cato in a close final round.
Photo 65/66   |   Dustin Jackson’s march to what may be a second Hot Shot’s Secret Pro Street title will forever include a win at the 2018 Scheid event. Dustin cashed in on competitors’ misfortune (breakage and such) throughout eliminations to secure his third victory of 2018.
Photo 66/66   |   Wade Moody continues to shine at the top of the Industrial Injection Pro Dragster Class. After four events, he is enjoying a healthy point lead over all others in the category. The win at Crossroads Dragway simply pads the tally.

Drag Race

The Outlaw Diesel Super Series kicked off the second half of its six-event season in Terre Haute, Indiana, with diesel vehicles of all sorts assaulting the eighth-mile track at Crossroads Dragway. The late-August conflict, the fourth stop on the sanction’s 2018 tour, was the final segment of Scheid Diesel Extravaganza—the annual festival of oil-burners and people who love them that also includes dyno, show ’n’ shine, and Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League’s sled-pull competition.

While Saturday’s action was delayed for several hours by a severe summer rainstorm (the weather sent E.T. Bracket, Big Rig, and 7.70/6.70 Index Classes’ first day of eliminations into the early hours of the next morning), the second day of racing for those categories and competition for the sanction’s Pro classes went off without a hitch on Sunday.

In our August 2018 issue, Editor KJ Jones discussed the widespread success of Lavon Miller and the network of his family and friends who collectively compete in all segments of diesel motorsports as Team Firepunk Diesel (“All They Do Is Win,” page 10). A force to be reckoned with at any event, the squad totally outdid itself at the Scheid race, with members scoring wins in several classes on Saturday and Sunday.

The ODSS continues to grow, bringing fans some of the most exciting, super-competitive, high-speed diesel-racing action in the U.S. The 2018 championship-points chase is getting tighter in all categories (especially the ATS Diesel Performance/Diesel Power Magazine 7.70 Index Class) as we enter the home stretch of the season.
