2015 Scheid Diesel Extravangaza

Scheid’s 19th-Annual Dieselfest Meets Every Expectation a Hard-Core Fan Could Have

If you were limited to only using one word to describe the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza, that word absolutely has to be, “amazing!” For the novice/first-time attendee (like your editor was), this annual assemblage of everything diesel can actually be a bit intimidating, simply because the truck, car, and people action—in and around Terre Haute, Indiana’s Wabash Valley Fairgrounds—is nonstop and in major abundance throughout the event’s three-day run.
“SDX” offers something for every diesel fan, and we’re sure 2015’s conclave didn’t disappoint anyone who was there. From the thousands of horsepower being registered on two chassis dynos to a record four rows of oil-burners in the show-’n’-shine paddock, two days of wicked sled-pull action, and everything from 2.0L Chevrolet Cruzes to 475-CAT-powered big rigs thundering down the eighth-mile dragstrip, the Extravaganza covered all the bases! As diesel events go, Scheid’s is viewed by many as the “big one” of any year. We agree. Given the amount of people and huge variety of vehicles we saw at this year’s event, it has to be.
However, to a small extent and from some people’s perspective (again, we cite the first-time attendees here), SDX can seem like just a massive assembly of every Cummins-powered vehicle in the Midwest. However, when you consider the fact that the Scheid Diesel Service (one of the diesel industry’s leaders in Cummins performance) headquarters is just a few miles down the road from the fairgrounds (and that the actual home of the 5.9L and 6.7L engines that bear Clessie’s last name is just a few hours up the freeway, in Columbus, Indiana), it just makes sense that those fans showed up for the Extravaganza by…well…the (Ram) truckload. On the whole, though, all the major diesel brands were very well represented at the 2015 event.
Photo 2/62   |   While nonstop diesel activity of all sorts is the format of the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza, Saturday night’s Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League sled pull competition (featuring trucks and tractors like this Against the Grain Dodge) is undoubtedly the highlight of the competitive events, with trucks…and tractors…battling for PPL championship points—especially in the crowd-favorite ARP Super Stock Class.
Photo 3/62   |   002 Headquarters
Photo 4/62   |   The phrase “from humble beginnings…” definitely applies to Dan Scheid and his performance-diesel empire. Located just a few miles from the Extravaganza’s site in Terre Haute, Indiana, Scheid Diesel Service’s original facility is origin for many of the big-horsepower engines that were on the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds property.
Photo 5/62   |   Scheid’s non-competitive side is headlined by a huge indoor/outdoor vendor midway that features a who’s who of companies offering discounted parts, upgrade consultation, and displays of the latest, greatest performance hardware for diesel engines and pickup trucks.

Photo 11/62   |   Who says you can’t have luxury with your diesel? These two Cadillacs—a vintage Sedan DeVille and a much-later Escalade SUV—are great examples of the creativity and ingenuity some enthusiasts have.
Photo 12/62   |   008 Gmc Sierra 2500hd Katie
Photo 13/62   |   Although “LB7” Katiee Pajestka was unable to personally attend SDX 2015 (she had to work), her clean, ’09 GMC Sierra 2500HD still made it to the show-’n’-shine area. The crew from Duramax Tuner and Wherli Custom Fabrication drove the compound-turbocharged, 1,000hp street truck from the Chicago area (280 miles), seeing fuel mileage in the 18-mpg range.
Photo 14/62   |   Rat rods and other vintage vehicles (check the green Dodge truck behind the red car) are also a big part of the show-’n’-shine display at Scheid’s Diesel Extravaganza. Like a majority of the rides being shown off, this one’s powered by a Cummins.
Photo 15/62   |   While there’s more than an abundance of Dodge and Ram trucks at SDX, there are also Fords that stand out in that crowd. Unfortunately, the owner of this clean OBS F-250 wasn’t around to give us details about what we think is a very impressive truck.

Photo 17/62   |   A great stance and sanitary appearance, compound turbos, and a sheetmetal intake manifold highlight this ’01 Dodge Ram 2500’s 24-valve 5.9L Cummins engine (yes, it also has a P-pump).

Photo 20/62   |   Following up on a tip from Harald Harks of BD Diesel Performance, we found Dave Hackett and his masterfully (and personally) restored ’93 GMC Sierra, which is powered by a Caterpillar 3126 diesel engine (300 hp/860 lb-ft of torque) and an Allison MD3060R six-speed automatic transmission. There’s a ton of “cool” in this truck (EVERYTHING works), and the Hacketts use it to travel around the country, getting 12.5 mpg…towing their travel trailer.
Photo 21/62   |   017 Dodge Ram Dakota
Photo 22/62   |   Mike Basten brought “the truck that Dodge should’ve made” to Scheid’s, and we saw a crowd gathered around it every time we passed by. The ’00 Dakota Sport has a ’93 Cummins 4BT engine neatly installed between its front fenders—a swap project (the original powerplant was a V-8) Mike says was inspired by Internet posts and the poor gas mileage the truck got with the original engine.
Photo 23/62   |   019 Red Chevy Cruze
Photo 24/62   |   Diesels of all shapes and sizes were on the property at SDX 2015. This red Chevrolet Cruze’s engine definitely had a nice exhaust growl—a good indicator that it may be a bit more turned up than it was when it left the assembly line.

SHOW ’n’ SHINE
We’re told the show-’n’-shine area at Scheid Diesel Extravaganza 2015 was twice as large as it has ever been. With two rows of trucks and cars in the covered display area at Wabash Valley Fairgrounds and another double layer of diesels on display just in front of those rigs beneath the bright Indiana sun (74 trucks on Friday and 111 trucks on Saturday), there was more than enough fine machinery on hand to satisfy the preferences of any diesel enthusiast.

Photo 35/62   |   As diesel engine swaps go, Garrett Balmer has executed one of the best trades we’ve seen. In the place where a V-6 engine originally sat, Garrett’s super-straight and very clean ’11 Ford Ranger now packs a self-installed Cummins 4BT that’s backed by Ford’s ZF-5 five-speed manual transmission, and it all truly looks factory-installed. “We were able to keep all the accessories, such as air conditioning, heater, and power steering,” says Garrett. With hopes of making at least 200 hp on the chassis dyno, the turbodiesel Ranger laid down 208 hp and 487 lb-of torque!

DYNO SHOOTOUT
There were two chassis dynos in action at SDX 2015, and their rollers seemed to spin nonstop throughout the three-day event. The mobile units of Dan’s Diesel Service and DP Tuner were the “dynos of record” for Friday and Saturday’s top-horsepower competitions, sponsored by Edge Products. On Dan’s rollers, Derek Rose’s ’06 Dodge Ram 2500 took top honors on Friday (1,548 hp/2,104 lb-ft), and Brian Rudoll’s ’06 Dodge Ram 2500 scored the win on Saturday (1,241 hp/2,015 lb-ft). DP Tuner’s dyno recorded 853 hp and 1,269 lb-ft of torque from Keith Burwell’s ’07 Dodge Ram 3500 on Friday, and Brian Rudoll’s ’06 Dodge Ram 2500 won a second title on Saturday, with winning horsepower and torque (1,097 hp/2,208 lb-ft) on the DP Tuner unit, too.
SLED PULL

SLED PULL
There’s no doubt, Lucas Oil Pro-Pulling League’s sled pull action was the big attraction at Scheid Diesel Extravaganza 2015. Fans packed grandstands on both sides of the track on Friday and Saturday nights, as mega-horsepowered pulling pickups, big rigs, and wheelstanding tractors churned the dirt and dragged the weighted sled for upward of 350 feet!

DRAG RACE

Drag Race
The 2015 Scheid Diesel Extravaganza also played host to the fifth event of the Outlaw Diesel Super Series’ six-race season. High-speed, drag race action took place over two days (on Crossroads Dragway, located at the far end of Wabash Valley Fairgrounds), with everything from daily-driven street cars (yes, there were a few TDI Volkswagens as well as an oil-burning Chevrolet Cruze competing) and pickups in the E.T. Bracket Class, to over-the-road semis, 7.70 Index, 6.70 Index, Pro Street rigs, and full-on dragsters like the brutally quick Scheid Diesel Service machine, which covers the eighth-mile distance in a little more than 4.5 seconds.
