Diesel Power Challenge 2019 Competitor Kody Pulliam - #DPC2019

Return of the King

Jul 22, 2019
Having reigned supreme in Diesel Power Challenge 2018 Presented by XDP, Kody Pulliam obviously has some pressure on his shoulders, but he's handling it all like the true champion he is.
"I am excited to go back to DPC this year to defend my title against the new competition," Kody says. "This year will be fun; I had a blast last year."
Working in the returning veteran's favor is his familiarity with the event template: "I will be more prepared this year, not just throwing a truck together in a few weeks and hoping for the best. I personally think I have an advantage over the competition because I have been there already, but then again, a lot can happen."

For Diesel Power Challenge 2019 Presented by XDP, Kody altered the truck's drivetrain slightly. The 6.6L Duramax engine now has lower compression, which Kody says should enable it "to handle more turbo boost and nitrous oxide without grenading itself." The transmission is also new. This is where Kody's prior experience at DPC comes in—he is able to dial in minute measurements to optimize the powertrain for different competitive segments.
Kody's diesel history started when he was 14 years old, when he was introduced to big trucks through family friends. In the intervening years, he acquired the '04 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD that won 2018's Diesel Power Challenge, turning it into a hardworking, hard-charging monster by way of a Baird Racing-built engine, full-billet Xcalliber-built Allison 1000 automatic transmission, compound turbochargers from Screamin' Diesel Performance, and more. His mechanical skills, honed by the Duramax and a '79 Chevy he's currently restoring as well as his job as a light- and medium-duty diesel tech, should help him keep his black crew cab pickup in competition and on the hunt for a second trophy.

Kody isn't the only member of his team with DPC experience. Connor South and Casey Dooley both attended DPC 2018 as members of Trae Hutton's team, while his friend and Custom Auto colleague Elmer Sanchez is coming along to lend a hand and a wrench. Kody's wife and child will be cheering him on as well. "They are my biggest supporters, and I can't imagine my life without them," he says.
Last year's performance was the epitome of stability and excellence, with Kody placing at or near the top of most segments to rise above the rest. "I've even told some of the other competitors, 'Be smart with the truck,' as that's what I'm going to do," Kody says. "Just be smart with the truck and try to stay consistent through it all."
