With all the late nights wrenching, waiting on parts, and strategy planning that come as part of the Diesel Power Challenge prep-package, it's easy to forget that the event is really about having fun, above everything else. Taking the event too serious can even turn the experience into a second, full-time job.

Dave Sanders may be one of the most thrilled to be involved in this year's Diesel Power Challenge. He's downright ecstatic about being able to compete against the strongest running diesel-powered trucks in the country. With a background in towing heavy around the farm, and sled pulling his '07 Chevy Silverado for fun, he should have no problem placing well in the trailer tow and the sled pull. In fact, he may just be the wildcard to watch out for in 2010. Here's how he plans to represent Team General Motors:
Diesel Power: What changes are you making to the truck?
Dave Sanders: "I'm putting a whole new braking system on the truck right now (it feels like the more power you give it the less the brakes work sometimes-like it won't stop!) So, this is the perfect time to do this."
"As for horsepower, when we ran at the Edge event in '08 we almost hit 1,000 hp. Let's just say we're past that point now."
DP: What is your strategy going to be for each event?
DS: "We're hoping we'll do pretty good in the sled pull, and we think the dyno will be our bread and butter."

"In the drag race, and if I can get that thing to hook up and get traction, I think it will be hard to catch."
"On the trailer tow, I always pull stuff around the farm-but it will definitely be different to see how fast I can actually pull it. It's gonna be a great time."
DP: What tires do you plan to use?
DS: "I have Toyos on there now, with about half tread. I might end up going with a set of Nittos, though."
DP: What spare parts are you bringing?
DS: "We'll have everything but a motor for spare parts. If the motor goes I'm in trouble, that's a pretty drastic change."
DP: Who are your crewmembers?
DS: "Me, my mechanic, Cam Hulse, then one more friend."
